  • A socio-ecological perspective of urban green networks: the Stockholm case
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Urban Ecosystems. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1083-8155 .- 1573-1642. ; 20, s. 729-742
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Landscape fragmentation threatens habitats, biodiversity and other ecosystem services. In tackling this threat, the dynamic processes of social-ecological systems should be recognised and understood. Although network analysis based on graph theory has been recognised as an efficient way of spatially understanding landscape or habitat connectivity, only few studies have offered specific approaches or suggestions for integrating detailed social-ecological values into geographical distributions. As a contribution to bridging this gap, this paper introduces a social-ecological network model for the issue of landscape or habitat fragmentation applied to the case of Stockholm, Sweden. Graph theory was used in combination with sociotope and biotope maps for simple visualisation of network situations in two-dimensional maps. The European crested tit (Lophophanes cristatus), European common toad (Bufo bufo) and human beings were selected as indicator species, based on a landscape ecology analysis in Stockholm Municipality in 2009. Slope, land use and human disturbance maps were assessed in order to decide cost values of travelling from node to node. Lease-cost-path accumulation was used to create ideal reference maps of green networks. Three separate maps were then developed for suggesting efficient routes for three indicators in city scale that mainly connect from the Royal National City Park to the other parts of the city. The model in Hjorthagen neighbourhood to highlight two practical paths that link this fragmented community to its neighbouring park areas. Findings make it possible to address two scales of network improvement strategies, namely first for the city-scale green network that connects geographical habitats (nodes) and the regional green wedges of the city, and the second that of neighbourhood links between habitats in detailed layers of green networks. Strategic improvement potentials are presented based on ideal reference maps of green networks correspondingly.

  • The Rise of the Cultural Treaty : Diplomatic Agreements and the International Politics of Culture in the Age of Three Worlds
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International History Review. - : Routledge. - 0707-5332 .- 1949-6540. ; 44:6, s. 1327-1346
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Beginning in the late 1950s, observers noted that states around the world were entering into cultural treaties—bilateral agreements promoting exchange and cooperation in a range of ‘cultural’ fields—at an accelerating rate. This article combines qualitative and quantitative approaches to offer an international overview of the growth in cultural treaty-making as a means of exploring the role of ‘culture’ in the conduct of interstate relations during the age of the Cold War and decolonization. The article first reconstructs the international history of how ‘cultural agreements’ were defined, and on that basis proposes a historically accurate way of categorizing them. Applying this categorization to data from the electronic World Treaty Index, it then presents a descriptive statistical analysis of how often, when, and by which states cultural agreements were signed between 1935 and 1980, identifying six major trends. The article concludes with a discussion of how to account, at the level of the international system, for these trends, suggesting that the mid-century rise of the cultural treaty reflected a distinctive historical conjuncture in which the statist and cultural-nationalist implications of such agreements made them seem a valuable diplomatic tool for certain states—to a degree not seen before or since.

  • Formulation and characterization of W/O nano-dispersions for bioactive delivery applications
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The main objective of this study was the formulation of food-grade water-in-oil (W/O) nano-dispersions based mainly on medium or long-chain triglycerides. Two types of dispersions were formulated and structurally compared, namely emulsions and microemulsions. The systems were used as matrices for encapsulating targeted bioactive molecules with specific characteristics such as antioxidants or peptides. The structural characterization of the formulated systems was investigated using techniques such as Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Cryogenic Transmission Electron Microscopy (Cryo-TEM) and Small Angle Xray Scattering (SAXS). The existence of swollen inverse micelles was revealed for the case of microemulsions whereas larger droplets still at the nano-scale were observed for the case of emulsions. Structural differences in the presence of the bioactive molecules or induced by the alteration of components were also observed. In order to study the efficacy of the formulations, the proposed loaded systems were assessed either using EPR spectroscopy or Well Diffusion Assay (WDA) depending on the bioactive molecule. It was found that the encapsulated molecules retained their claimed characteristics when encapsulated to the proposed matrices. Finally, some of the formulated dispersions were investigated for their behavior under gastrointestinal (GI) conditions. A two-step digestion model using recombinant Dog Gastric Lipase (rDGL) and Porcine Pancreatic Lipase (PPL) was proposed to simulate lipid hydrolysis in humans. The studies revealed significant decrease of the rDGL specific activity in the presence of the microemulsion while in the presence of lower percent of surfactants (case of emulsion) no alterations were observed.

    • The rapid technological developments of the new millennium have presented exciting challenges to the well-established field of cultural memory studies. Today, it behoves us analyse the ways in which digital systems make it possible to store, copy, and decentralize memories, making them increasingly accessible on the Internet. The digital media offer gateways to the past that are more comprehensive as well as free and open. The cultural artefacts, pictures, and documents that in previous eras were exclusively a matter for libraries, archives, and museums are now increasingly and at an accelerating rate becoming available online. The aim of this article is twofold. It introduces a new field of cultural research, one that lies on the border between historical memory studies and media and communication research. It then argues for the importance of a media history angle on the subject of media and memory, an angle that recognizes that the media not only mirrors but also shapes our culture. This article raises the question of whether we as historians in fact alter our definitions of 'memory', 'storage', and 'archive' in the context of digital media. And, if so, what the consequences might be for historical memory studies.

  • Comparison of reverse transcription quantitative real-time PCR, flow cytometry, and immunohistochemistry for detection of monoclonality in lymphomas.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: ISRN oncology. - : Hindawi Limited. - 2090-5661 .- 2090-567X. ; 2014
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In healthy humans, 60-70% of the B lymphocytes produce kappa light chains, while the remaining cells produce lambda light chains. Malignant transformation and clonal expansion of B lymphocytes lead to an altered kappa:lambda expression ratio, which is an important diagnostic criteria of lymphomas. Here, we compared three methods for clonality determination of suspected B cell lymphomas. Tumor biopsies from 55 patients with B cell malignancies, 5 B-lymphoid tumor cell lines, and 20 biopsies from patients with lymphadenitis were analyzed by immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, and reverse transcription quantitative real-time PCR. Clonality was determined by immunohistochemistry in 52/53 cases, flow cytometry in 30/39 cases, and reverse transcription quantitative real-time PCR in 33/55 cases. In conclusion, immunohistochemistry was superior to flow cytometry and reverse transcription quantitative real-time PCR for clonality identification. Flow cytometry and reverse transcription quantitative real-time PCR analysis has complementary values. In a considerable number of cases tumor cells produced both kappa and lambda light chain transcripts, but only one type of light chain peptide was produced.

  • The weakening role of education studies and the re-traditionalisation of Swedish teacher education
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Oxford Review of Education. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0305-4985 .- 1465-3915. ; 38:3, s. 287-303
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research suggests that certain common policy presuppositions can be identified regarding teacher education programmes in advanced knowledge-based economies, most notably the relationship between formal education (schooling) and economic production, and the role of teacher education in respect to this relationship. This article draws on the work of Basil Bernstein to engage theoretically and critique the nature of that evolving policy relationship within the context of Sweden. While the article concentrates on developments in one country, however, it is contended that the findings are symptomatic of a wider European or even global trend in which the scientific foundation of teacher education is under threat.

  • Experimental investigations into the irregular synthesis of iron(iii) terephthalate metal-organic frameworks MOF-235 and MIL-101
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Dalton Transactions. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1477-9226 .- 1477-9234. ; 50:14, s. 4976-4985
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • MOF-235(Fe) and MIL-101(Fe) are two well-studied metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with dissimilar crystal structures and topologies. Previously reported syntheses of the former show that it has greatly varying surface areas, indicating a lack of phase purity of the products, i.e. the possible presence of both MOFs in the same sample. To find the reason for this, we have tested and modified the commonly used synthesis protocol of MOF-235(Fe), where a 3 : 5 molar ratio of iron(iii) ions and a terephthalic acid linker is heated in a 1 : 1 DMF : ethanol solvent at 80 degrees C for 24 h. Using XRD and BET surface area (SA(BET)) measurements, we found that it is difficult to obtain a pure phase of MOF-235, as MIL-101 also appears to form during the solvothermal treatment. Comparison of the XRD peak height ratios of the synthesis products revealed a direct correlation between the MOF-235/MIL-101 content and surface area; more MOF-235 yields a lower surface area and vice versa. In general, using a larger (3 : 1) DMF : ethanol ratio than that reported in the literature and a stoichiometric (4 : 3) Fe(iii) : TPA ratio yields a nearly pure MOF-235 product (SA(BET) = 295 m(2) g(-1), 67% yield). An optimized synthesis procedure was developed to obtain high-surface area MIL-101(Fe) (SA(BET) > 2400 m(2) g(-1)) in a large yield and at a previously unreported temperature (80 degrees C vs. previously used 110-150 degrees C). In situ X-ray scattering was utilized to investigate the crystallization of MOF-235 and MIL-101. At 80 degrees C, only MOF-235 formed and at 85 and 90 degrees C, only MIL-101 formed.

  • On the evaluation of hierarchical forecasts
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Forecasting. - : Elsevier. - 0169-2070 .- 1872-8200. ; 39:4, s. 1502-1511
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to provide a thinking road-map and a practical guide to researchers and practitioners working on hierarchical forecasting problems. Evaluating the performance of hierarchical forecasts comes with new challenges stemming from both the structure of the hierarchy and the application context. We discuss several relevant dimensions for researchers and analysts: the scale and units of the time series, the issue of intermittency, the forecast horizon, the importance of multiple evaluation windows and the multiple objective decision context. We conclude with a series of practical recommendations.

  • Left Ventricular Pressure-Strain-Derived Myocardial Work at Rest and during Exercise in Patients with Cardiac Amyloidosis
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography. - : MOSBY-ELSEVIER. - 0894-7317 .- 1097-6795. ; 33:5, s. 573-582
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Left ventricular pressure-strain-derived myocardial work index (LVMWI) is a novel, noninvasive method for left ventricular (LV) function evaluation in relation to LV pressure dynamics. LV global longitudinal strain (LVGLS) has proven benefit for diagnosis and risk stratification in patients with cardiac amyloidosis (CA), but LVGLS does not adjust for loading conditions. The aim of the present study was to characterize LVMWI at rest and during exercise in patients with CA. Methods: A total of 155 subjects were retrospectively included. These subjects comprised 100 patients with CA and 55 healthy control subjects. All patients had previously undergone comprehensive two-dimensional echocardiographic examinations at rest. Furthermore, a subgroup 27 patients with CA and 41 control subjects was examined using sennisu pine exercise stress echocardiography. Results: Patients with CA had significantly lower LVGLS, LVMWI, and LV myocardial work efficiency (LVMWE) than control subjects (P < .0001 for all). The reduction in LV myocardial performance was more pronounced in the basal segments, which led to significant alterations in the average apical-to-basal segmental ratios between patients with CA and control subjects (LVGLS, 2.6 [1.9 to 4.1] vs 1.3 [1.2 to 1.5]; LVMWI, 2.6 [1.7 to 3.8] vs 1.3 [1.1 to 1.5]; LVMWE, 1.1 [1.0 to 1.3] vs 1.0 [1.0 to 1.1]; P < .0001 for all). The average increase in LVMWI from rest to peak exercise was 1,974 mm Hg% (95% CI, 1,699 to 2,250 mm Hg%; P < .0001) in control subjects and 496 mm Hg% (95% CI, 156 to 835 mm Hg%; P < .01) in patients with CA. The absolute numeric LVGLS increase was 5.6% (95% CI, 3.9% to 7.3%; P < .0001) in control subjects and only 1.2% (95% CI, -0.9% to 3.3%; P = .26) in patients with CA (between groups, P < .0001) from rest to peak exercise. The LVMWI increase in patients with CA was mediated by improvement in the apical segments (P < .0001), whereas there was no significant LVMWI alterations in the midventricular or basal segments. LVMWE remained stable during exercise in control subjects (Delta -0.6%; 95% CI, -2.5% to 1.2%; P = .50) but decreased significantly in patients with CA (Delta -2.5%; 95% CI, -4.8% to -0.2%; P < .05). Conclusions: Patients with CA have significantly reduced magnitude of LVMWI compared with healthy control subjects. With exercise, the differences are even more pronounced. Even though LVMWI increased with exercise, LVMWE decreased, suggesting inefficient myocardial energy exploitation in patients with CA.

  • Simple solutions for improving thermal comfort in huts in the highlands of Peru
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Heliyon. - : Elsevier BV. - 2405-8440. ; 9:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the Peruvian mountains, hundreds of thousands of rural households living in poverty live in cold indoor environments, close to 0 °C. Indoor cold causes thousands of respiratory diseases and excess of winter deaths. In this study, we numerically calculated the impact of simple low-cost refurbishments on discomfort time during a year. Using EnergyPlus and Python, we modelled a typical one-room hut used as bedroom built with a metal-sheet roof, adobe walls, dirt floors, and high infiltration rates. Then, 9 individual solutions were studied, and their combination resulted in 215 different hut designs. The model was calibrated with field measurements to estimate the infiltration. All the numerical calculations included an uncertainty analysis based on Monte Carlo method, and a sensitivity analysis to assess the impact of reducing infiltration on discomfort time. The base case had a discomfort time of 44% of time. The calibration of infiltration resulted in a mean hourly air exchange rate equal to 29.1 h−1 (SD = 17.0 h−1). Five different designs formed the Pareto front that optimized discomfort time and costs. The solution with the lowest discomfort time during a year, 37% of the time, was adding insulation to the roof (U = 0.83 W/m2•K) and the door (U = 1.00 W/m2•K); and its cost was 286USD. In this solution, when infiltrations were reduced to 4.1 h−1 (SD = 4.1 h−1) discomfort time decreased until 16%. These results benefit those households that nowadays invest their limited resources to improve their living conditions but without technical guidance.

  • Multimessenger science reach and analysis method for common sources of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 85:10, s. 103004-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the baseline multimessenger analysis method for the joint observations of gravitational waves (GW) and high-energy neutrinos (HEN), together with a detailed analysis of the expected science reach of the joint search. The analysis method combines data from GW and HEN detectors, and uses the blue-luminosity-weighted distribution of galaxies. We derive expected GW + HEN source rate upper limits for a wide range of source parameters covering several emission models. Using published sensitivities of externally triggered searches, we derive joint upper limit estimates both for the ongoing analysis with the initial LIGO-Virgo GW detectors with the partial IceCube detector (22 strings) HEN detector and for projected results to advanced LIGO-Virgo detectors with the completed IceCube (86 strings). We discuss the constraints these upper limits impose on some existing GW + HEN emission models.

  • Governing dual objectives within single policy mixes : an empirical analysis of large carnivore policies in six European countries
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Environmental Policy and Planning. - : Routledge. - 1523-908X .- 1522-7200. ; 23:4, s. 399-413
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Policy mixes (i.e. the total structure of policy processes, strategies, and instruments) are complex constructs that can quickly become incoherent, inconsistent, and incomprehensive. This is amplified when the policy mix strives to meet multiple objectives simultaneously, such as in the case of large carnivore policy mixes. Building on Rogge and Reichardt's analytical framework for the analysis of policy mixes, we compare the policy mixes of Norway, Sweden, Finland, the Netherlands, Germany (specifically Saxony and Bavaria), and Spain (specifically Castilla y León). The study shows that the large carnivore policy mixes in the case countries show signs of lacking vertical and horizontal coherence in the design of policy processes, weak consistency between objectives and designated policy instruments, and, as a consequence, lacking comprehensiveness. We conclude that creating consistent, coherent, and comprehensive policy mixes that build on multiple objectives requires stepping away from sectorized policy development, toward a holistic, systemic approach, strong collaborative structures across policy boundaries and regions, the inclusion of diverse stakeholders, and constant care and attention to address all objectives simultaneously rather than in isolation.

  • Liraglutide modulates GABAergic signaling in rat hippocampal CA3 pyramidal neurons predominantly by presynaptic mechanism
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: BMC Pharmacology & Toxicology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2050-6511. ; 18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Backgroundγ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain where it regulates activity of neuronal networks. The receptor for glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is expressed in the hippocampus, which is the center for memory and learning. In this study we examined effects of liraglutide, a GLP-1 analog, on GABA signaling in CA3 hippocampal pyramidal neurons.MethodsWe used patch-clamp electrophysiology to record synaptic and tonic GABA-activated currents in CA3 pyramidal neurons in rat hippocampal brain slices.ResultsWe examined the effects of liraglutide on the neurons at concentrations ranging from one nM to one μM. Significant changes of the spontaneous inhibitory postsynaptic currents (sIPSCs) were only recorded with 100 nM liraglutide and then in just ≈50% of the neurons tested at this concentration. In neurons affected by liraglutide both the sIPSC frequency and the most probable amplitudes increased. When the action potential firing was inhibited by tetrodotoxin (TTX) the frequency and amplitude of IPSCs in TTX and in TTX plus 100 nM liraglutide were similar.ConclusionsThe results demonstrate that liraglutide regulation of GABA signaling of CA3 pyramidal neurons is predominantly presynaptic and more limited than has been observed for GLP-1 and exendin-4 in hippocampal neurons.

  • Building de novo reference genome assemblies of complex eukaryotic microorganisms from single nuclei
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 10:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The advent of novel sequencing techniques has unraveled a tremendous diversity on Earth. Genomic data allow us to understand ecology and function of organisms that we would not otherwise know existed. However, major methodological challenges remain, in particular for multicellular organisms with large genomes. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are important plant symbionts with cryptic and complex multicellular life cycles, thus representing a suitable model system for method development. Here, we report a novel method for large scale, unbiased nuclear sorting, sequencing, and de novo assembling of AM fungal genomes. After comparative analyses of three assembly workflows we discuss how sequence data from single nuclei can best be used for different downstream analyses such as phylogenomics and comparative genomics of single nuclei. Based on analysis of completeness, we conclude that comprehensive de novo genome assemblies can be produced from six to seven nuclei. The method is highly applicable for a broad range of taxa, and will greatly improve our ability to study multicellular eukaryotes with complex life cycles.

    • We find good rate 2/3 and 3/4 convolutional codes for use with iterative decoding (turbo equalization) of coded intersymbol interference with AWGN. The method is based on the input-output bit error rate characteristic of the convolutional BCJR decoder module. An analysis leads to an equivalent minimum distance under the required intrinsic subtraction, which depends on free distance and an input-output LLR correlation parameter.

  • Ingår i: Computer graphics forum (Print). - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0167-7055 .- 1467-8659. ; 36:6, s. 354-367
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Domain-continuous visibility determination algorithms have proved to be very efficient at reducing noise otherwise prevalent in stochastic sampling. Even though they come with an increased overhead in terms of geometrical tests and visibility information management, their analytical nature provides such a rich integral that the pay-off is often worth it. This paper presents a time-continuous, primary visibility algorithm for motion blur aimed at ray tracing. Two novel intersection tests are derived and implemented. The first is for ray versusmoving triangle and the second for ray versusmoving AABB intersection. A novel take on shading is presented as well, where the time continuum of visible geometry is adaptively point-sampled. Static geometry is handled using supplemental stochastic rays in order to reduce spatial aliasing. Finally, a prototype ray tracer with a full time-continuous traversal kernel is presented in detail. The results are based on a variety of test scenarios and show that even though our time-continuous algorithm has limitations, it outperforms multi-jittered quasi-Monte Carlo ray tracing in terms of image quality at equal rendering time, within wide sampling rate ranges.

  • Herschel and ALMA measurements of dust and molecules in supernova 1987A

  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Science. - 1824-8039. ; Part F113823
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dust production by supernovae is important in the dust life cycle of a galaxy. The explosion of SN 1987A was the nearest SN detected in the last 400 years, allowing us detailed studies of contemporary evolution of a supernova for the first time. In 2011, Matsuura et al. reported 0.4-0.7 M of dust in SN 1987A based on Herschel HERITAGE survey data, which is surprisingly large compared to prior measurements of supernovae. In this paper, we present our follow-up studies of this important discovery about SN 1987A using the Herschel Space Observatory and the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). We highlight two important results, the detection of cold molecular gas and dust in the ejected material of SN 1987A. Our results suggest that SNe are significant producers of dust and molecules, as well as heavy elements, driving chemical evolution of galaxies.

  • CRP is associated with lung function decline in men but not women : a prospective study
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Respiratory Medicine. - : Elsevier BV. - 0954-6111 .- 1532-3064. ; 107:1, s. 91-97
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Systemic inflammation is associated with impaired lung function. Studies, most cross-sectional, report a stronger association between systemic inflammation and lung function impairment in men than women. The aim was to evaluate gender differences in the longitudinal association between systemic inflammation and lung function. We used data from randomly chosen residents of Reykjavík, born 1940–54, who were investigated in three stages: Baseline (1973–75; 1983–85) and follow-up (2001–03). The participants (n = 1049, 574 women) had a mean age of 28 ± 6 years at baseline and mean follow-up time of 27 ± 4 years. At each stage lung function (FEV1 and FVC) and C-reactive protein (CRP) were evaluated.Change in FEV1 (p = 0.04) and FVC (p = 0.01) was associated with baseline CRP in men but not in women. In the multiple variable analysis, CRP at baseline was associated with a decline in FEV1 (−3.1 mL/year, 95% CI: −5.1, −0.99) and FVC (−2.5 mL/year, 95% CI: −4.4, −0.65) in men but not in women. Similarly during follow-up, change in CRP, standardised to 1SD, was associated with a decline in FEV1 (−0.19 mL/year, 95% CI: −0.30, −0.07) and FVC (−0.11 mL/year, 95% CI: −0.22, −0.01)) in men but not in women. This prospective study confirms a stronger association between systemic inflammation and lung function decline in men than in women. This may indicate a gender difference in the mechanisms of lung function decline.

  • Cerebrospinal fluid in the differential diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease: clinical utility of an extended panel of biomarkers in a specialist cognitive clinic
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Alzheimer's research & therapy. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1758-9193. ; 10, s. 1-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers are increasingly being used to support a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Their clinical utility for differentiating AD from non-AD neurodegenerative dementias, such as dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) or frontotemporal dementia (FTD), is less well established. We aimed to determine the diagnostic utility of an extended panel of CSF biomarkers to differentiate AD from a range of other neurodegenerative dementias. We used immunoassays to measure conventional CSF markers of amyloid and tau pathology (amyloid beta (Aβ)1-42, total tau (T-tau), and phosphorylated tau (P-tau)) as well as amyloid processing (AβX-38, AβX-40, AβX-42, soluble amyloid precursor protein (sAPP)α, and sAPPβ), large fibre axonal degeneration (neurofilament light chain (NFL)), and neuroinflammation (YKL-40) in 245 patients with a variety of dementias and 30 controls. Patients fulfilled consensus criteria for AD (n=156), DLB (n=20), behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD; n=45), progressive non-fluent aphasia (PNFA; n=17), and semantic dementia (SD; n=7); approximately 10% were pathology/genetically confirmed (n=26). Global tests based on generalised least squares regression were used to determine differences between groups. Non-parametric receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and area under the curve (AUC) analyses were used to quantify how well each biomarker discriminated AD from each of the other diagnostic groups (or combinations of groups). CSF cut-points for the major biomarkers found to have diagnostic utility were validated using an independent cohort which included causes of AD (n=104), DLB (n=5), bvFTD (n=12), PNFA (n=3), SD (n=9), and controls (n=10).There were significant global differences in Aβ1-42, T-tau, T-tau/Aβ1-42 ratio, P-tau-181, NFL, AβX-42, AβX-42/X-40 ratio, APPα, and APPβ between groups. At a fixed sensitivity of 85%, AβX-42/X-40 could differentiate AD from controls, bvFTD, and SD with specificities of 93%, 85%, and 100%, respectively; for T-tau/Aβ1-42 these specificities were 83%, 70%, and 86%. AβX-42/X-40 had similar or higher specificity than Aβ1-42. No biomarker or ratio could differentiate AD from DLB or PNFA with specificity >50%. Similar sensitivities and specificities were found in the independent validation cohort for differentiating AD and other dementias and in a pathology/genetically confirmed sub-cohort.CSF AβX-42/X-40 and T-tau/Aβ1-42 ratios have utility in distinguishing AD from controls, bvFTD, and SD. None of the biomarkers tested had good specificity at distinguishing AD from DLB or PNFA.

  • Sammansättningar med accent 1 i skånemål
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Svenska landsmål och svenskt folkliv. - Uppsala : Kungl. Gustav Adolfs Akademien för svensk folkkultur. - 0347-1837. ; 335, s. 43-67
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In contrast to Central Standard Swedish and most other varieties of Scandinavian, South Swedish varieties are known for a substantial and systematic prevalence of accent 1 in compounds. Previous studies have dealt primarily with standard varieties and focused on their synchronic phonology. The present one – which is based on a limited body of data and is to be considered preliminary – deals with the distribution of accents 1 and 2 in compounds in the traditional dialects of the southern Swedish province of Scania (Skåne) from a diachronic point of view. A diachronic theory is presented which divides compounds into primary compounds (those formed directly as compounds) and secondary compounds (emanating from syntactically conditioned juxtapositions). Primary compounds are further divided into stem compounds and formally secondary compounds (compounds that are etymologically primary, but share their first elements or other morphological characteristics with secondary compounds). It is concluded that accent 1 is at least as prevalent in traditional Scanian dialects as it is in South Swedish standard varieties, and that the distributional pattern has its origins in the traitional dialects and can be linked to the formation of compounds. The line is to be drawn between secondary and formally secondary compounds, on the one hand, and stem compounds, on the other. Compounds belonging to the former category generally retain the accent of the first element, while the latter category displays a more complex distributional pattern, with certain synchronic prosodic structures apparently allowing or favouring accent 1 and others requiring accent 2 – although there are diachronically conditioned limitations to this pattern. The study also addresses a number of morphologically ambiguous compound types with accent 1 that have previously been regarded as irregular. It is found that some of these at least can be analysed as secondary compounds, which, in view of the results outlined above, explains their accent.

  • Mutation analysis and copy number alterations of KIF23 in non-small-cell lung cancer exhibiting KIF23 over-expression
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: OncoTargets and Therapy. - : DOVE MEDICAL PRESS LTD. - 1178-6930. ; 10, s. 4969-4979
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • KIF23 was recently suggested to be a potential molecular target for the treatment of lung cancer. This proposal is based on elevated expression of KIF23 in several tumors affecting breast, lung, brain, and liver, and also on the presence of KIF23 mutations in melanoma and colorectal cancer. Recently, we identified a mutation in the KIF23 gene causing a rare hereditary form of dyserythropoietic anemia (CDA III) with predisposition to blood cancer. We suggested that KIF23 overexpression in tumors might be due to the presence of activating somatic mutations, and therefore, mutation screening of the KIF23 in 15 non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cases with elevated expression level of KIF23 was undertaken. Eight sequence variants were found in all samples. Furthermore, one variant was present in two cases, and one variant was case specific. Nine variants were previously reported while one variant lacks frequency information. Nine of ten cases available for single nucleotide polymorphism-array analysis demonstrated aberrant karyotypes with additional copy of entire chromosome 15. Thus, no activating somatic mutations in coding regions of the KIF23 were found. Furthermore, no mutations were detected in cell cycle genes homology region in KIF23 promoter responsible for p53-dependent repression of KIF23 expression. We showed that the elevated level of KIF23 could be due to additional copy of chromosome 15 demonstrated in 90% of NSCLC cases analyzed in this study. Considering the crucial role of KIF23 in the final step of mitosis, the gene is a potential molecular marker, and for better understanding of its role in cancer development, more tumors should be analyzed.

  • Some Cases of Kudla’s Modularity Conjecture for Unitary Shimura Varieties
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A common theme of the thesis is the interplay of symmetry and rigidity, which is a general phenomenon in mathematics. Symmetry is a notion related to the degree to which an object remains unchanged under transformations, and rigidity is a notion that in terms of physics can be thought of as a lack of freedom, which leads to stronger properties of an object than we normally expect. An object of higher symmetry often also exhibits a higher extent of rigidity, and vice versa. In the introduction of the thesis, we provide some background on modular forms, number theory, and geometry in a way that does not require familiarity with these subjects. The contributions of this thesis are presented in three articles. In Article I, we establish the existence of rational geometric designs for rational polytopes via the circle method and convex geometry, and discuss the existence of rational spherical designs which relates to Lehmer's conjecture on the Ramanujan tau function. In Article II, we break the barrier of expressing weight-2 modular forms of higher level whose central L-values vanish by products of at most two Eisenstein series. This work shows the power of Rankin--Selberg method and also contributes to the computation of elliptic modular forms. In Preprint III, we prove unconditionally some cases of Kudla's conjecture on the modularity of generating functions of special cycles on unitary Shimura varieties, for norm-Euclidean imaginary quadratic fields. Our method is based on a result of Liu and work of Bruinier--Raum, who confirmed the orthogonal Kudla conjecture over Q.

  • Ergodicity criteria for non-expanding transformations of 2-adic spheres
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Discrete and Continuous Dynamical Systems. - : American Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS). - 1078-0947 .- 1553-5231. ; 34:2, s. 367-377
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the paper, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for ergodicity (with respect to the normalized Haar measure) of discrete dynamical systems < f; S2-r (a)> on 2-adic spheres S2-r (a) of radius 2(-r), r >= 1, centered at some point a from the ultrametric space of 2-adic integers Z(2). The map f: Z(2) -> Z(2) is assumed to be non-expanding and measure-preserving; that is, f satisfies a Lipschitz condition with a constant 1 with respect to the 2-adic metric, and f preserves a natural probability measure on Z(2), the Haar measure mu(2) on Z(2) which is normalized so that mu(2)(Z(2)) = 1.

  • Probabilistic Forecasts Using Expert Judgment : The Road to Recovery From COVID-19
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Travel Research. - : Sage Publications. - 0047-2875 .- 1552-6763. ; 62:1, s. 233-258
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating effect on many industries around the world including tourism and policy makers are interested in mapping out what the recovery path will look like. We propose a novel statistical methodology for generating scenario-based probabilistic forecasts based on a large survey of 443 tourism experts and stakeholders. The scenarios map out pessimistic, most-likely and optimistic paths to recovery. Taking advantage of the natural aggregation structure of tourism data due to geographic locations and purposes of travel, we propose combining forecast reconciliation and forecast combinations implemented to historical data to generate robust COVID-free counterfactual forecasts, to contrast against. Our empirical application focuses on Australia, analyzing international arrivals and domestic flows. Both sectors have been severely affected by travel restrictions in the form of international and interstate border closures and regional lockdowns. The two sets of forecasts, allow policy makers to map out the road to recovery and also estimate the expected effect of the pandemic.

  • Why and How do Universities Work for Sustainability in Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) Skåne?
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1467-6370 .- 1758-6739. ; 9:4, s. 469-478
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to open up a discussion about the roles and responsibilities of universities in society. Design/methodology/approach – The vision of the Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) Skane a leading example on how to develop new knowledge about education for sustainable development (ESD) at all levels. The paper poses the question "Why do universities involve in this process?". Lund University as the old, traditional university and the ten-year old university of Malmö on the other hand was formed on the bases of a vision about a university for all people. Findings – The paper finds that two universities have been active in creating RCE Skane, together with three political organizations. The vision has developed to include issues like capacity for cross-boundary action, knowledge-sharing and civic education, all important parts in learning for a sustainable future. Practical implications – The paper discusses the processes at these universities that led up to working together in RCE Skåne and the importance of having the Act on Higher Education in 2006 about responsibility for education for sustainability at all universities. Originality/value – In forming RCEs all over the world it is important to learn from each other and universities play an important role in these actions.
