  • Pioneering Price Level Targeting : the Swedish Experience 1931-1937
  • 1998
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In September 1931,  Sweden became the first country to make the stabilization of the domestic price level the official goal of its monetary policy, actually the only country that so far has adopted such an explicit price level target. Starting from the issues and concepts familiar from research and policy experience in the 1990s of inflation targeting - as contrasted to price level targeting - this paper examines the evolution of the Swedish price level targeting in the 1930s. We bring out a number of similarities and differences between price stabilization in the 1930s and in the 1990s.

  • Magnetic resonance imaging and MR angiography of endoluminally treated abdominal aortic aneurysms
  • 1998
  • In: European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery. - 1532-2165. ; 15:3, s. 212-219
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: To evaluate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with gadolinium-based contrast medium-enhanced MR angiography (MRA) for the follow-up of endoluminally treated abdominal aortic aneurysms. DESIGN: MRI/MRA, angiography and computed tomography (CT) were performed 1 month after endoluminal stent-graft placement. MRI/MRA was repeated at 6 and 12 months and angiography and CT were added to confirm unexpected findings. MATERIALS: Fifteen male patients with endoluminally treated abdominal aortic aneurysms. METHODS: MRI with MRA, spiral CT with transverse images and angiography were performed. RESULTS: MRI/MRA demonstrated changes of stent-graft morphology, aortic neck- and aneurysmal diameter, stent-graft blood flow, stent-graft leakage, blood flow in lumbar arteries, intra-aneurysmal thrombus, periaortic inflammation and vertebral body infarction. For most of these features MRI/MRA provided more information than angiography and/or CT. MRI was the only method demonstrating thrombus reorganisation and vertebral body infarction. CONCLUSIONS: MRI with MRA provides the relevant information needed for follow-up of endoluminally treated abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). This may be the method of choice because of its use of contrast media with very low nephrotoxicity, lack of ionising radiation and non-invasiveness.

  • Inflation and switches between specie and paper standards in Sweden 1668-1931 : A public finance interpretation
  • 1996
  • In: Scottish Journal of Political Economy. - 0036-9292. ; 43:4, s. 444-467
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this study, the recent literature on the integration of fiscal and monetary policy is used to examine the suspensions and resumptions of currency convertibility in Sweden during the period 1668-1931. We demonstrate that urgent demands for financing of war expenditures forced the Swedish Riksbank to abandon convertibility of its notes in all cases of suspensions prior to 1914. We argue that the suspension periods should be regarded as unexpected lapses into discretion from rule-bound convertibility regimes rather than as part of an optimal ex ante public finance policy. All resumptions of convertibility, except for the resumption of 1924, implied an ex post formal devaluation. All suspensions were illegal, except in 1931 when a constitutional escape clause was invoked.

  • MONETARY REGIMES AND ENDOGENOUS WAGE CONTRACTS: SWEDEN 1908-1995
  • 1998
  • Other publication (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • We examine Gray´s theory of endogenous length of wage contracts and inflation indexation, using a uniquely long data set of blue-collar worker collective agreements in Sweden 1908-1995. Volatile monetary regimes, i. e. regimes with large macroeconomic uncertainty, are associated with short length and inflation indexed contracts. We also find inertia in changes in contract characteristics to changes in the regime. The findings support the Lucas critique, but cautions against simple divisions of time series in different regimes wherein agents' decision rules are assumed constant.

  • 1997
  • In: Research in Economics. - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-9443. ; 51:3, s. 275-301
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This study examines the long-run relationship between finance and economic growth in Sweden from the 1830s to the 1990s using recently developed econometric techniques for tests of cointegration. The role of investment, education and technological progress (patents) is accounted for as well in order to assess the relative importance of the development of the financial system for growth performance. A fairly unique set of long-run data is employed. To our knowledge, no tests of this kind have been reported previously, at least not for the European experience. The empirical work suggests that there has been a pattern of interaction among the variables examined. The estimated contribution of the financial system to economic growth is shown to depend crucially on the time period studied and the variables included in the analysis.

  • 1996
  • In: Ekonomisk Debatt. - 0345-2646. ; 24:3
  • Review (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Off Gold and Back again: Finnish and Swedish Monetary Policies 1914-1925
  • 1995. - 1. utg.
  • In: Banking, Currency and Finance in Europe between the Wars. - : Oxford University PressOxford. - 0198288034 ; , s. 237-266
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Sweden went back to gold at the pre‐war parity, whereas Finland returned at the existing rate, accepting the depreciation of the markka that had occurred over the war and early post‐war years. The authors use a quantity‐theory framework to investigate the results of the divergent exchange rate and monetary policies followed by the two countries. The Swedish economy was forced to undergo a severe contraction, while Finland escaped the need for such an adjustment at the cost of a higher rate of inflation, and enjoyed a post‐war boom on the basis of its devalued currency. However, this was not the result of a deliberate choice on the part of the Finnish authorities: it was rather that the central bank lacked the resources needed to support the markka.
