  • Basic instrumentation for Hall A at Jefferson Lab
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-5087 .- 0168-9002. ; 522:3, s. 294-346
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The instrumentation in Hall A at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility was designed to study electro-and photo-induced reactions at very high luminosity and good momentum and angular resolution for at least one of the reaction products. The central components of Hall A are two identical high resolution spectrometers, which allow the vertical drift chambers in the focal plane to provide a momentum resolution of better than 2 x 10(-4). A variety of Cherenkov counters, scintillators and lead-glass calorimeters provide excellent particle identification. The facility has been operated successfully at a luminosity well in excess of 10(38) CM-2 s(-1). The research program is aimed at a variety of subjects, including nucleon structure functions, nucleon form factors and properties of the nuclear medium. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Laser-induced thermal stress and the heat shock response in neural cells
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Acta Orthopaedica Scandinavica. - : Medical Journals Sweden AB. - 0001-6470. ; 75:5, s. 610-617
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background The Ho: YAG laser is used extensively in orthopedic surgery. It offers a minimally invasive method of ablating tissue with precision. Previous studies have explored the effects of laser use on temperature during experimental foraminoplasty. To date, there has been limited work on the effects of thermal stress on cells in this context. Material and methods Cells were exposed either to heated medium or the Ho: YAG laser in the high-power mode. Heated medium was used as a stressor by (I) exposing groups of cells to a constant temperature of 45°C for varying lengths of time: 5, 10, 15 and 20 min, and (II) exposing cells for a fixed length of time (5 min) to varying temperatures: 45°C, 55°C, 65°C with a control treated at 37°C. A third group was subjected to direct laser treatment. The effects of the treatments were assessed using trypan blue staining as a measure of viability and immunocytochemistry was used to measure changes in heat shock protein (HSP) expression. Results There was a negative correlation between cell viability and HSP expression, and between cell viability and the severity of the treatment. Interpretation Our findings suggest a possible role for the Ho: YAG laser in spinal foraminoplasty based on the high level of cell viability in the treatment regimen that most closely mirrored the clinical application of the laser.

  • EPS - an interactive collaborative game using non-verbal communication
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Stockholm Music Acoustics Conference, August 6-9, 2003 (SMAC 03), Stockholm, Sweden. ; , s. 561-563
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The interactive game environment EPS (expressive performance space), presented in this short paper, is a work still in progress. EPS involves participants in an activity using non-verbal emotional expressions. Two teams use expressive gestures in either voice or body movements to compete. Each team has an avatar controlled either by singing into a microphone or by moving in front of a video camera. Participants/players control their avatars by using acoustical or motion cues. The avatar is navigated /moving around in a 3D distributed virtual environment using the Octagon server and player system. The voice input is processed using a musical cue analysis module yielding performance variables such as tempo, sound level and articulation as well as an emotional prediction. Similarly, movements captured from the video camera are analyzed in terms of different movement cues. The target group is children aged 13- 16 and the purpose is to elaborate new forms of collaboration.

  • Bone integration of an injectable calcium phosphate based bone substitute
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Transactions - 7th World Biomaterials Congress. - 1877040193 ; , s. 276-276
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The bone formation and bone integration in calcium phosphate (CaP) and CaP with 20% calcium sulfate (CaS) were investigated. In the study, six adult, loop-eared rabbits were used and bone harvest chambers were implanted bilaterally in the proximal tibiae. It was found that the front of bone formation follows closely the front of material resorption without interposition of fibrous tissue. The results implied that a mixture of CaP and CaS can be introduced as an injectable bone graft substitute for filling bone defects.

  • A systematic genomewide linkage study in 353 sib pairs with schizophrenia.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Human Genetics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0002-9297 .- 1537-6605. ; 73:6, s. 1355-1367
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We undertook a genomewide linkage study in a total of 353 affected sib pairs (ASPs) with schizophrenia. Our sample consisted of 179 ASPs from the United Kingdom, 134 from Sweden, and 40 from the United States. We typed 372 microsatellite markers at approximately 10-cM intervals. Our strongest finding was a LOD score of 3.87 on chromosome 10q25.3-q26.3, with positive results being contributed by all three samples and a LOD-1 interval of 15 cM. This finding achieved genomewide significance (P<.05), on the basis of simulation studies. We also found two regions, 17p11.2-q25.1 (maximum LOD score [MLS] = 3.35) and 22q11 (MLS = 2.29), in which the evidence for linkage was highly suggestive. Linkage to all of these regions has been supported by other studies. Moreover, we found strong evidence for linkage (genomewide P<.02) to 17p11.2-q25.1 in a single pedigree with schizophrenia. In our view, the evidence is now sufficiently compelling to undertake detailed mapping studies of these three regions.
