  • A standard format for Les Houches Event Files
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Computer Physics Communications. - : Elsevier BV. - 0010-4655. ; 176:4, s. 300-304
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A standard file format is proposed to store process and event information, primarily output from partoti-level event generators for further use by general-purpose ones. The information content is identical with what was already defined by the Les Houches Accord five years ago, but then in terms of Fortran commonblocks. This information is embedded in a minimal XML-style structure, for clarity and to simplify parsing.

  • Dynamics of the solid and liquid phases in dilute sheared Brownian suspensions: Irreversibility and particle migration
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114 .- 0031-9007. ; 99:24, s. 4-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Magnetic resonance measurements of migration and irreversible dynamics in the capillary shear flow of a Brownian suspension are presented. The results demonstrate the presence of phenomena typically associated with concentrated noncolloidal systems and indicate the role of many body hydrodynamics in dilute Brownian suspension transport. The application of concepts from chaos theory and nonequilibrium statistical mechanics is demonstrated.

  • The lens eyes of the box jellyfish Tripedalia cystophora and Chiropsalmus sp. are slow and color-blind
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Comparative Physiology A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1432-1351 .- 0340-7594. ; 193:5, s. 547-557
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Box jellyfish, or cubomedusae, possess an impressive total of 24 eyes of four morphologically different types. Compared to other cnidarians they also have an elaborate behavioral repertoire, which for a large part seems to be visually guided. Two of the four types of cubomedusean eyes, called the upper and the lower lens eye, are camera type eyes with spherical fish-like lenses. Here we explore the electroretinograms of the lens eyes of the Caribbean species, Tripedalia cystophora, and the Australian species, Chiropsalmus sp. using suction electrodes. We show that the photoreceptors of the lens eyes of both species have dynamic ranges of about 3 log units and slow responses. The spectral sensitivity curves for all eyes peak in the blue-green region, but the lower lens eye of T. cystophora has a small additional peak in the near UV range. All spectral sensitivity curves agree well with the theoretical absorbance curve of a single opsin, strongly suggesting color-blind vision in box jellyfish with a single receptor type. A single opsin is supported by selective adaptation experiments.

  • Bulky DNA adducts, 4-aminobiphenyl-haemoglobin adducts and diet in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) prospective study
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Nutrition. - 1475-2662 .- 0007-1145. ; 100:3, s. 489-495
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In contrast to some extensively examined food mutagens, for example, aflatoxins, N-nitrosamines and heterocyclic amines, some other food contaminants, in particular polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and other aromatic compounds, have received less attention. Therefore, exploring the relationships between dietary habits and the levels of biomarkers related to exposure to aromatic compounds is highly relevant. We have investigated in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort the association between dietary items (food groups and nutrients) and aromatic DNA adducts and 4-aminobiphenyl-Hb adducts. Both types of adducts are biomarkers of carcinogen exposure and possibly of cancer risk, and were measured, respectively, in leucocytes and erythrocytes of 1086 (DNA adducts) and 190 (Hb adducts) non-smokers. An inverse. statistically significant, association has been found between DNA adduct levels and dietary fibre intake (P=0.02), vitamin E (P =0.04) and alcohol (P=0.03) but not with other nutrients or food groups. Also, an inverse association between fibre and fruit intake, and BMI and 4-aminobiphenyl-Hb adducts (P=0.03, 0.04, and 0.03 respectively) was observed. After multivariate regression analysis these inverse correlations remained statistically significant, except for the correlation adducts v. fruit intake. The present study suggests that fibre intake in the usual range can modify the level of DNA or Hb aromatic adducts, but Such role seems to be quantitatively modest. Fibres could reduce the formation of DNA adducts in different manners, by diluting potential food mutagens and carcinogens in the gastrointestinal tract, by speeding their transit through the colon and by binding carcinogenic substances.

  • Evidence of gene-gene interactions in lung carcinogenesis in a large pooled analysis
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Carcinogenesis. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0143-3334 .- 1460-2180. ; 28:9, s. 1902-1905
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To test the hypothesis of interaction among genetic variants in increasing the individual risk of cancer, we have studied the cumulative effect on lung cancer risk of variants in three metabolic genes, CYP1A1, GSTM1 and GSTT1, which are involved in the metabolism of the tobacco smoke constituents and environmental contaminants, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and of other lung carcinogens. We have selected from the Genetic Susceptibility to Environmental Carcinogens pooled analysis all the studies on lung cancer conducted after 1991 in which all variants were available. The data set includes 611 cases and 870 controls. We found a cumulative effect of the combination of the a priori ' atrisk ' alleles for these genes (P for trend 0.004). The risk of lung cancer was increased with the combination of CYP1A1*2B or CYP1A1*4 alleles and the double deletion of both GSTM1 and GSTT1 up to an odds ratio (OR) of 8.25 (95% confidence interval 2.29-29.77) for the combination including CYP1A1*4; among never smokers, the latter combination was associated with an OR of 16.19 (1.90-137). Estimates did not change after adjustment by the number of cigarettes smoked and duration of smoking were consistent across ethnicities and were approximately the same for adenocarcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas. These observations from a large pooled analysis strongly suggest the existence of gene-gene interactions in lung carcinogenesis. People with rare combinations of common gene variants have a high risk of cancer and can be assimilated to subjects with highly penetrant mutations.
