Distribution of atmospheric mercury species in Northern Europe: Final results from the MOE-project

- The mercury species over Europe (MOE) project was aimed at identifying sources, occurrence and atmospheric behaviour of atmospheric Hg species. Within MOE, emission measurements, ambient air measurements, process and regional-scale modelling and laboratory measurements were conducted. In this work, a summary of some of the main results is given. From the emission measurements, information on stack gas concentrations and emission factors for five coal fired power plants and three waste incinerators are presented. Results from field measurements of mercury species in ambient air at five locations in Northern Europe are presented. Examples from regional-scale atmospheric modelling are also given. The results emphasise the importance of information on Hg species for instance in emission inventories and measurement data from background sites. Furthermore, the importance of considering the role of the global cycling of mercury in future control strategies is emphasised

- In summer 1997 and winter 1998, paired boundary air and surface water samples were collected during cruises in the southern Baltic Sea. Simultaneously, deposition samples were taken at Gotland Island, located close to the air-water sampling area. Water samples taken shortly after the flooding of Oder and Wisla Rivers in summer 1997 were also included in the study. Concentrations and gas exchange fluxes of - and -HCH and chiral composition of -HCH were determined. According to fugacity calculations, the HCHs were close to air-sea partitioning equilibrium. The net fluxes varied over time, particularly during summer. Importance of the air to sea removal routes "gross gas deposition" and "wet deposition" were about equal for -HCH, while the scavenging via precipitation was less important for -HCH. Enantiomer fractions were used to estimate the fraction of -HCH in the boundary air layer that had volatilized from the water. During summer, the fraction was approximately 60%, and wintertime significantly less (0-35%). Variations in air mass origin were clearly reflected in net air-sea gas exchange and isomeric and enantiomeric "signatures" in boundary air. The composition of boundary air and precipitation was also variable depending on season.

Atmospheric Mercury in Sweden, Northern Finland and Northern Europe. Results from National Monitoring and European Research

- Atmospheric mercury concentrations and mercury fluxes measured during the period 1995 to 1999 at the AMAP master station of Pallas, a remote station in Northern Finland, and at Rörvik an EMEP station located on the West Coast of Sweden are reported. The result are discussed and compared with atmospheric mercury data generated within the EU-project, Mercury over Europe (MOE). Total particulate mercury exhibit a strong south to north gradient with the highest concentrations in the south, near source areas in Central Europe. Mercury in precipitation also exhibits a south to north gradient

Kvicksilver och organiska miljögifter i Örserumsviken. Utvärdering av mätresultat

- En omfattande sammanställning har gjorts om miljötillståndet i Örserumsviken söder om Västervik, med avseende på miljöföroreningarna PCB, PAH och kvicksilver. Viken är för närvarande föremål för en genomgripande sanering. Resultaten visar att stora mängder PCB och kvicksilver ligger lagrade inom området, samt att Örserumsviken är en källa till PCB och kvicksilver för omgivningen, medan PAH i större utsträckning deponeras i området. Betydande mängder av samtliga tre föroreningsgrupper uppskattas avgå med vatten ut i Östersjön varje år.
