  • Naturligt grupperat arbete vid Volvo Lastvagnar – Delrapport 2
  • 1989
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Consumer report for the company in question (the Volvo Truck Company) which is financed by the company and partly also by a research foundation. It is a matter of a work that in this particular case were carried out during nine years in a number of experimental workshops located outside the Chalmers University of Technology. These workshops were financed by the Volvo Automobile and Truck companies. This achievement, as the final contribution to the Swedish automotive industry after having already treated this research field/problem area for more than two decades before this particular period if time (involving several junior and senior research competencies, as well as industrial and governmental foundings). Specifically (and as stated for the previous report), this publication explains how the authors dealt with the product architecture and product variation of the automotive products disassembled, which proved to necessary to be carried out in one of the experimental workshops (several complete automobiles and one heavy truck chassis were disassembled combined with having product data accessible in form of paper print-outs as well as by appropriate computer connections to the two Volvo companies etc.). That is, by using a special sort of “design analysis by means of axonometric hand-drawn illustrations” (see a conference contribution from 1992 that also is registered and available as o PDF-document at Chalmers Public Library (CPL) (a self-developed method found out together with a junior research competency from the School of Architecture at Chalmers).

  • Effektiv småbåtsproduktion. Delrapport
  • 1984
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Consumer report ("avnämarrapport" in Swedish) for a research foundation (Styrelsen för Teknisk Utveckling, Stockholm). A comment: Publishing consumer reports was the praxis during this (early) period of time at Chalmers University of Technology, as well as probably at some other universities. This means that frequent and vast academic publication by means of e.g. conference papers and refereed contributions to scientific journals was almost unheard of. At least so for some of the applied science disciplines. However, today are the situation indeed very different (i.e. earlier was the publication in many respects focused on trying to satisfy the executive administrator the research foundation in question etc.). To be more precise, this early praxis was definitively the case for the research and development work carried out at the Department of Transportation (a broadly applied science discipline), which was characterized by more practical strives to e.g. engineer research results. Rather than relying on truer scientific efforts in a narrower sense. Functional satisfaction (i.e. something engineered work as planned instead verification/falsification of a hypothesis) was judged as being a primary aim of this research and development work. Therefore are (in the context of the publications registered in Chalmers Public Library CPL) the author making distinctions between consumer reports, on one hand. And, one the other hand, reports and preprints (manuscripts), while instead the academically orientated publications are various sort of scientific contributions presented at conferences or published in scientific journals (actually it is somewhat more complex, but further explanations are omitted here). The consumer reports were aimed at a various external organization with who the authors cooperated, and these are in many cases not available in PDF format to be easily read by logging in at CPL. This particular approach has judged as being fair/relevant fair in order to mirror of work conducted by the author or authors during the passing decades. Besides, the competencies at Chalmers Library, who actually have been very helpful, have not managed to provide appropriate answers to the various questions implied being at hand just above (this despite trying to get hold of such answers, hence this very comment).

    • Consumer report for the company in question (the Volvo Automobile Company) which is financed by the company and partly also by a research foundation. It is a matter of a work that in this particular case were carried out during nine years in a number of experimental workshops located outside the Chalmers University of Technology. This system of interrelated drawings was in the developed in the experimental workshop an formed the basis for the assembly work conducted at the Volvo Uddevalla plant (it explains/illustrated a so-called assembly-oriented product structure, which is something very different from the common Volvo companies so-called Function Group Register that instead is a design-oriented product structure) (see the authors' other publication). These workshops were financed by the Volvo Automobile and Truck companies. This achievement, as the final contribution to the Swedish automotive industry after having already treated this research field/problem area for more than two decades before this particular period if time (involving several junior and senior research competencies, as well as industrial and governmental founding). This system of interrelated drawing was developed in one of the experimental workshops together with e.g. operators (as well as senior research competency within vocational learning and training from Gothenburg University) from the temporary learning and training workshop predating the Volvo Uddevalla plant, and thereafter used for full-scale product purpose in the completed assembly plant. They were formalised by an information system used for such purposes. Thus, it is fair to state that these particular drawings were validated at an industrial scale, expressing an assembly-oriented product structure for the Volvo 700-model (note that the system represents years and years of work from both our and others side) (we were helped out by an architect from Chalmers University of Technology, who worked for years in one of the experimental workshops thereby helping us out to formalise the decomposed automotive products (see the authors’ other publications). Comment 1: See a conference contribution from 1992 that also is registered and available as o PDF-document at Chalmers Public Library (CPL) (a self-developed method found out together with e.g. a junior research competency from the School of Architecture at Chalmers as well as by getting helped out på the senior research competency withing vocational learning and training). Comment 2: Publishing reports, especially consumer reports, was the praxis during this (early) period of time at Chalmers University of Technology, as well as probably at some other universities. • Resursbehov i materialflödessystem med varierande integrationsnivåer. En studie av lastmoduler i integrerade transportsystem
  • 1988
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This was a work carried out by the authors in parallel with the at this period of time ongoing work at the Department of Transportation and at the Volvo Automobile Company’s assembly plant in Uddevalla. In this case were modularization and synchronization of large parts in focus (as this was a sort of common denominator for our practical and theoretical development at the Department of Transportation). A comment: Publishing reports, especially consumer reports, was the praxis during this (early) period of time at Chalmers University of Technology, as well as probably at some other universities. • 1985
  • Ingår i: Fire and Materials. - : Wiley. - 1099-1018 .- 0308-0501. ; 9:1, s. 41-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A series of experiments for studies of flammability characteristics of upholstered furniture is presented. The series comprises 53 experiments on a reduced scale and 11 full-scale experiments in an extensively instrumented room. Results are presented from measurements of rate of heat release and smoke production. The experiments indicate that ignitability can be considerably decreased by careful choice of the upholstery materials.

  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This was a research and development work carried out together with The Swedish Food Institute (SIK), Gothenburg. In many respects was a matter of prospecting the authors' work within the Swedish automotive industry to another field of application. However, in this case, was one of the results a publication presented at a scientific conference. • 1989
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book (financed by The Swedish work Environment Fund) summarises the three authours´insights and experiences dealing with group work (i.e. from their own scientific point of departure). Especially so with regarding on the projection of the Volvo Automobile Companys´assembly plant that was located in Uddevalla. Insight and experiences that in total embrace the design, running-in and full-scale production phases of this specific plant, but this book was authored and published some years before the actual closing down period). The three points of departures are at hand. Namely, from (1) a time geographical as well (2) a vocational learning and trained perspectives by the two authors from Gothenburg University. On the other hand, the third author represents (3) a sort of materials handling and feeding technique perspective, as this discipline has been handled and interpreted by this authors from Chalmers University of Technology (i.e. a more socio-technologic point of departure/approach). A comment: This publication is authored together with senior research competencies (1) within vocational learning and training as well as (2) within time-geography with whom Engström have had long time cooperation procedures.

Besides, the competencies at Chalmers Library, who actually have been very helpful, have not managed to provide appropriate answers to the various questions implied being at hand just above (this despite trying to get hold of such answers, hence this very comment).

  • Trycksensor innefattande en tryckkänslig flat kapsel
  • 1989
  • Patent (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • A pressure sensor comprises a pressure-sensitive, flat capsule (1) adapted to be actuated by a pressure which is to be measured, and to be excited to oscillate in mechanical resonance with a resonance frequency dependent on said pressure, as well as to undergo a deformation caused by said pressure, for producing a change in rigidity of the entire capsule (1) and, consequently, an alteration of the resonance frequency thereof. The pressure sensor is characterised in that the capsule (1) is fixed (at 3) with respect to, and adapted to execute said resonance oscillation about, two intersecting unforced nodal lines (10, 11) of the capsule. When the capsule executes its resonance oscillation, it oscillates substantially perpendicular to a geometrical plane common to both nodal lines (10, 11).

  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Harvard Computer Fire Code Mark V has been used to simulate full-scale Furniture fires. Simulations were run with one sofa burning in the open and another burning in a small room. To obtain better agreement between experiment and simulation, changes were made in the code to include heating of the lower surfaces in the room. A simulation of a mattress test, conducted at NBS, is included. Comparison with a zone model using a different plume equation is also presented.

  • Naturligt grupperat arbete vid Volvo Lastvagnar – Delrapport 1
Specifically, this publication explains how the authors dealt with the product architecture and product variation of the automotive products disassembled, which proved to necessary to be carried out in one of the experimental workshops (several complete automobiles and one heavy truck chassis were disassembled combined with having product data accessible in form of paper print-outs as well as by appropriate computer connections to the two Volvo companies etc.).

This achievement, as the final contribution to the Swedish automotive industry after having already treated this research field/problem area for more than two decades before this particular period if time (involving several junior and senior research competencies, as well as industrial and governmental foundings). Specifically, this publication explains in one particular perspective how the authors dealt with the product architecture and product variation of the automotive products disassembled, which proved to necessary to be carried out in one of the experimental workshops (FOOTNOTE 1). Namely how the product variation and product variant were handled (FOOTNOTE 2). However, even if much of our work was introduced for full-scale production purposes was the product planning system practised in the Volvo Uddevalla plant never reformed (even if far-reaching efforts were considered before the closing down). The original planning system was one of the reasons for not being able to reap the potential of this assembly plant (i.e. the time-saving of some 2 – 4 hours in comparison to the Volvo Torslanda plant was not possible to accumulate due to the use of traditional codification of product variants suited for assembly line work) (see some of the other publications registered in Chalmers Public Library CPL). FOOTNOTE 1: See a conference contribution from 1992 that also is registered and available as a PDF-document at Chalmers Public Library (CPL) (a self-developed method found out together with a junior research competency from the School of Architecture at Chalmers). This publication reports on an alternative system for planning of product variant long before the Volvo Uddevalla plant was closed down.

  • Möjligheter till produktions- och arbetsorganisation inom konfektionsindustrin

  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Consumer report ("avnämarrapport" in Swedish) for a research foundation (Styrelse för Teknisk Utveckling STU, Stockholm). More specifically, this publication shows how the initiation of e long cooperation project with the Volvo Truck Company as started. It illustrated how an engine preheater for a heavy truck chassis is assembled on one of the two assembly lines in the Volvo Tuve plant in Gothenburg. It became obvious for others and us that the original logic of this engine preheater was lost as the components required alternately were fitted at different work stations (implying the fact that the logic of the product architecture and product variation of the physical product are totally destroyed) (in fact, the situation was even worse while taking the computer formalized product information on both of the two Volvo companies into consideration.

That is, besides of making the product architecture and product variation understandable for the parties involved (operators as well as practitioners), was the functions of the automotive products just as important to grasp. Especially so with regard to if such (product) functions was something that was or gradually become evident during the assembly work, or alternatively if this was impossible to understand. In the latter case, such as chassis settings (that eventually to some extent would be possible to grasp), or many marketed-oriented codes (that are extremely difficult to decode) (several complete automobiles and one heavy truck chassis were disassembled combined with having product data accessible in form of paper print-outs as well as by appropriate computer connections to the two Volvo companies etc. as well as other publication that dealt with automotive matters from the Volvo or from other more public sources).
