  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The history of bilingual lexicography starts in the third millennium B.C. From the age of glosses carved in clay tablets through the media revolution, when printed books replaced manuscripts, little happened until the end of the 20th century. Then the concept of ”translation equivalent”, hitherto solid as a rock, was questioned by the translation science. With the e-dictionaries bilingual lexicography is now at a crossing. The users take multiple access to all information coded in the dictionary for granted. The established theoretical dichotomy between source language vs. target language and between L1 and L2 perspective is no longer valid. And then there is Google Translate, which now – as shown below – provides adequate translations to an increasing extent. The future challenge for bilingual lexicography lies in adjusting the theory of lexicography and the corresponding methods to the possibilities offered by technology and the demands of the users.

  • Ingår i: Nordiska studier i lexikografi. - 0803-9313. - 9789185333424 ; 11, s. 512-523
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores possibilities and challenges that electronic media represent in a collection of three dictionaries with Icelandic as a source language and Danish, Norwegian and Swedish as target languages, i.e. the ISLEX dictionaries. This new medium allows dictionary users to conduct searches in many ways, both in lemmas and in equivalents. The dictionaries could therefore be considered as both bi-directional and multi-functional, but it is important to emphasize that they were not developed with this in mind. This article uses this as a point of reference to discuss whether ISLEX should be categorized as a mono-, bi- or multi-lingual dictionary.

  • Ekvivalensrelationer i tvåspråkig lexikografi
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: LexicoNordica. - 0805-2735. ; 19, s. 39-58
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When establishing relations of equivalence between expressions in a source language and a target language, the bilingual lexicog¬rapher has various matters to consider: (1) whether to apply the contrastive perspective already when analyzing the source lan¬guage, (2) what kind of equivalence relationship should be estab¬lished, and (3) how to handle the different degrees of convention¬alization and lexicalization of concepts and expressions in the source language and target language, respectively. In addition, modern technology has influenced dictionary making, dictionary usage and possible user groups. For instance, lacunae of equiva¬lents have become obvious in web-based dictionaries. This paper discusses these matters – after a brief initial discussion about bilingual lexicography and its relationship to translation theory.

    • My first acquaintance with the Japanese language was physical. It was forty years ago, and I was practicing karate. Although the martial arts were then – and still are – very popular in Sweden, their contributions to the Swedish lexicon has indeed been very modest. Not many of the terms one associates with the various budo disciplines have made their way out of the dojo. The first time the Swedes got into contact with the Japanese language was in the midst of the 17th century, when Swedish seafarers started to join the Dutch East India Company’s trading expeditions to the Far East. One of them was Olof Eriksson Willman. His travelogue from one of these expeditions was published in 1667. There he describes how he in 1652 arrives at Nagasaki and then travels to Jedo, the capital of the country. In his text, there are scattered remarks on the Japanese language. Those are mostly in the form of terms for specific Japanese phenomena or notions, to which he added Swedish equivalents or explanations. Just one of these Japanese words made its way into the Swedish lexicon to such a degree that it is listed in the comprehensive historical dictionary published by The Swedish Academy (SAOB) and attributed to Willman’s travelogue: the word saké. The second Swede to keep a travelogue of his journey to Japan was one of the disciples of the eminent Swedish botanist Carolus Linnaeus: Carl Peter Thunberg. With the accuracy of a scientist Thunberg describes his contact with the Japanese people and their language as well as the country itself and its nature. In spite of the severe restrictions to which at that time foreigners were subjects, Thunberg managed to learn and write down some 1 500 Japanese words and phrases, which he included in his travelogue. Hardly a single one of all of these words were incorporated into the Swedish language: only two words of Japanese origin in SAOB occur for the first time in Thunberg’s travelogue, viz samurai and Sinto. However important to the Swedish society in terms of wealth and knowledge, these long and often hazardous voyages did not contribute equally to the Swedish lexicon. Today, at the early 21st century, the martial arts are practiced by an ever-increasing number of Swedes. Also influences from modern Japanese popular culture are quite significant in the Swedish society and some of the Japanese concepts bring with them their original names. The youngsters who used to play with their Pokémon, later read manga magazines and watched animé, and now, as grown ups, struggle solving their Sudoku puzzles enjoying sushi. These popular Japanese elements in the everyday life of the Swedes were certainly not carried all the way from Japan to Sweden on board a ship.

  • Explicit och implicit information i tvåspråkig lexikografi
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Nordiska studier i lexikografi. Rapport från Konferensen om lexikografi i Norden, Tammerfors 3–5 juni 2009. - 0803-9313. - 9789514481437 ; 10, s. 150-163
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In modern linguistics, the distinction between grammatical and lexical description has usually been sharp. As a consequence of the concentration on the grammar model in linguistic theory, the role of the lexicon has tended to become implicit, not to say undeveloped or trivial. In this paper, we give a survey of the evolution of the Swedish lexicographical tradition. Four distinct lexicographic lines of development are distinguished: the Latin, the patriotic, the bilingual, and the monolingual type of lexicography. A brief sketch of the early lexico¬graphers’ view on grammar and lexicon is given and, in particular, the effort by Abraham Sahlstedt to combine the two perspectives in a dictionary and a grammar. It has now become obvious that his approach was an isolated occurrence. The dichotomy between the grammatical and the lexical description can cause interesting linguistic problems to be completely overlooked. One such problem is dis¬cussed in the paper, viz. the possibility of deleting prepositions in Swedish. It is suggested that the mono¬lingual description would gain by a strengthened and explicit lexical and semantic dimension in grammar and vice versa. Further¬more, an explicit, contrastive perspective on grammatical and semantic features in the object languages would improve modern bilingual lexicography.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article a fresh approach is suggested to the problem of the transition from vernacular Swedish to a fully-developed medium of scientific discourse. It is argued that the sociolinguist Einar Haugen's notion of "language planning" can also serve as a model to analyse and explain language change from a sociolonguistic point of view. The author applies the four phases of this LP model, i.e. selection, codification, implementation and elaboration, to describe the progression which Swedish underwent, from a poorly codified vernacular to a developed, standardized language. With reference to these four phases, she elaborates on the role played by the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus. According to the author, Linnaeus supported the selection and implementation phases by promoting Swedish rather than Latin for the lectures and transactions of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Linnaeus also contributed directly to the elaboration and codification phases by creating a Swedish vocabulary appropriate to his scientific findings.

  • Glossarium – Sveo-Gothicum: en underlig ordbok eller ett bidrag till forskningen?
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: LexicoNordica. - 0805-2735. ; :26, s. 35-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Haquin Spegel’s Glossarium – Sveo-Gothicum (1712) marks an important step in the history of Swedish lexicography. Liberating his dictionary from the Latin-based tradition, the author himself compiled the lemma list. However, the information provided in the entries is not typical of any specific type of dictionary. In this article, the mono-, bi- and multilingual features of the Glossarium are described. This survey leads to the issue of Spegel’s aim with his effort. In addition to producing a Swedish dictionary, he also intended to further the knowledge of Swedish in the international science community and to contribute to an ongoing work on a polyglot dictionary: a lexicon harmonicum.

  • Icelandic as depicted in the Basque-Icelandic glossaries of the 17th century: The first occurrences of Icelandic in a lexicographic context
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: 11th International Conference on Historical Lexicography and Lexicology, June 16-18, 2021, University of La Rioja.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The presentation focuses on the Icelandic language as it appears in four Basque-Icelandic glossaries, a residue from dealings between Basque whalers and Icelandic peasants in the 17th century. The Icelandic items (around 1,000 in total) are compared to the entries in two Icelandic-Latin dictionaries published in the 17th century, and around one third of them is unique for the glossaries. The discrepancy between the vocabulary in the glossaries versus the dictionaries could both be explained by the different lexical functions (target versus source language) and by the different purposes (to facilitate verbal communication between Basques and Icelanders, versus to make the Icelandic medieval literature accessible to foreigners).

    • This paper presents ISLEX, an inter-Nordic project based in Reykjavík, Iceland, with partners in Gothenburg, Bergen and Copenhagen. The aim of the project is to develop an online dictionary site with Icelandic as the source language and the three Scandinavian languages- Swedish, Norwegian (with two official standards) and Danish-as the target languages. The dictionary is planned to contain 50,000 lemmas, with a development period of six years. In 2011, or possibly sooner, the site will be publicly available on the Internet, free of charge. In this article, the main features of the project are presented with particular emphasis on database design, editorial principles and priorities.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we relate bilingual lexicography and contrastive construction grammar via bilingual constructicography, addressing the treatment of constructional and phraseological information in bilingual lexicography. After a discussion of the different notions of equivalence in lexicography and constructicography, we compare two online resources: the Swedish constructicon and the Icelandic-Swedish part of Islex.se. It is shown that although Islex.se contains a wealth of constructional information, this does not readily carry over across languages. A creative user can find correlections between constructions in Icelandic and Swedish, but these connections are indirect and somewhat ad hoc. Explicit links between the two languages mainly concern lemmas. In an online resource, it is clearly possible to also include systematic comparisons of phraseological information, and we argue that making use of constructionist resources such as constructicons would be helpful in this regard.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The source language-target language dicotomy is not valid in the electronic dictionary, where information units in the target language are just as accessible as units in the source language. In this article, the consequences of multiple access in bilingual lexicography and its implications for dictionary typology are discussed. Focus lies on the representation of the target language vocabulary – more precisely on the coverage of the Swedish target language in the online Icelandic–Swedish Islex dictionary. The equivalent lacunas observed are partly due to discrepancies in the lexical structure of the languages involved, partly to the outdated role played by Swedish as target language in the dictionary.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The role of bilingual lexicography in the history of the Swedish language was long overlooked within historical linguistics – in spite of the fact that dictionaries and glossaries constitute one of the oldest continuous genres of Swedish written language. In their work, from the late 15th century and throughout the early modern period, the bilingual lexicographers established an adequate vocabulary of the Swedish language. They created a lexical description of Swedish words and they also established ways of presenting semantic and pragmatic features in Swedish. Furthermore, the prefaces and introductions to the dictionaries provide a forum where current linguistic issues are debated. In the 19th century, the first monolingual Swedish dictionary was based directly on its bilingual predecessors. The bilingual lexicography contributed to the consolidation and standardisation of Swedish much more than has been conceded by the language historians of the 20th century. The early dictionaries prove that the Swedes were part of the learned European community and they are also the result and an expression of the contact between Swedish-speaking society and other language communities in Sweden. But first and foremost, the early bilingual dictionaries reflect the development of the Swedish language and the metaperspective of that language in a way that no other genre can.

    • The goal of the official Nordic language politics is that the Nordic cooperation shall continue to be conducted in the Scandianvian lagnuages. Therefore, the subject neighbouring Scandinavian languages must be strengthened in schools. To that purpose the subject must be adequately treated in the education of teachers of Danish, Norwegian and Swedish. The stress must be on communication skills and above all the ability to understand speakers of the different Scandianavian languages. In the education of teachers today there is a lack of teachers with enough competence for this training. To maintain the Nordic language community, it is necessary to formulate a specific commission of this subject to the relevant education institutions. It ought to be a task expressively formulated in the system of qualification of exams, in the same way as it is formulated as a task in the curricula of the school subject Danish, Norwegian and Swedish. Thus the responsibility in higher education for the future of the Nordic language community would be located at the right level, that is, with the vice-chancellor.
