  • Real Time Traffic Management by Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation
  • 1995
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We introduce a six layer model of traffic variations and a corresponding model of management actions. In particular, we traffic study real time traffic management on the traffic and session levels which correspond to variations on the hour and minute levels. Using virtual paths (VPs) and virtual channels (VCs) as the managed entities on the two levels respectively, we put forward a simple and robust strategy for traffic management in real time: For slow variations, i.e. on the traffic level, all nodes simultaneously monitor offered traffics and forward the result to a network management centre (NMC); The NMC computes a new set of optimal VPs compares the result to the existing network; If a change appears profitable, the necessary information is sent back to the nodes and the new design is implemented. For fast variations, i.e. on the session level, dynamic routing schemes similar to those of public switched telephone networks are employed. Applying our strategy to control general networks subject to traffics which in advance are known only as expectations, we develop simple methods for traffic observation, derive the optimal observation interval, brie y review algorithms to compute VP networks, develop a cost optimal test to determine whether to implement a new design or not, and derive the optimal updating interval. Running our strategy in a simulator, we discover a considerable adaptivity and a performance far better than obtained by alternative methods.

  • Artificial agent action in markets
  • 2001. - 2
  • Ingår i: Electronic Commerce Research. - 1389-5753 .- 1572-9362. ; 1:1-2, s. 159-168
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We summarise our experiences of a number of demonstrators and simulation experiments designed to test the feasibility of using artificial decision making agents in real-time domains, and comment on the significance of our results to autonomous artificial agent action patterns in markets. Our main hypothesis is that the use of norms can extend the capability of artificial decision makers beyond what is obtained from implementing individual utility maximisers in keeping with rational choice theory.

  • Concentrating and sequestering biomolecules in condensates: impact on plant biology
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Experimental Botany. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0022-0957 .- 1460-2431. ; 74, s. 1303-1308
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Biomolecules can exist in a variety of forms, ranging from single entities to mesoscale assemblies akin to small organelles, also known as ‘biomolecular condensates’. The formation of biomolecular condensates is expedited by phase separation, in which molecules de-mix to form dilute and condensed phases. Phase separation results in concentrating or sequestering certain molecules, thus altering their abundance or other features in the phases and in this way inhibiting or promoting biochemical reactions. Here, we discuss recent research implicating biomolecular condensates in the regulation of biochemical reactions in plants.

  • Cysteine protease mcII-Pa executes programmed cell death during plant embryogenesis
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. - : Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. - 0027-8424. ; 102:40, s. 14463-14468
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Programmed cell death (PCD) is indispensable for eukaryotic development. In animals, PCD is executed by the caspase family of cysteine proteases. Plants do not have close homologues of caspases but possess a phylogenetically distant family of cysteine proteases named metacaspases. The cellular function of metacaspases in PCD is unknown. Here we show that during plant embryogenesis, metacaspase mcII-Pa translocates from the cytoplasm to nuclei in terminally differentiated cells that are destined for elimination, where it colocalizes with the nuclear pore complex and chromatin, causing nuclear envelope disassembly and DNA fragmentation. The cell-death function of mcII-Pa relies on its cysteine-dependent arginine-specific proteolytic activity. Accordingly, mutation of catalytic cysteine abrogates the proteolytic activity of mcII-Pa and blocks nuclear degradation. These results establish metacaspase as an executioner of PCD during embryo patterning and provide a functional link between PCD and embryogenesis in plants. Although mcII-Pa and metazoan caspases have different substrate specificity, they serve a common function during development, demonstrating the evolutionary parallelism of PCD pathways in plants and animals.

  • Elastic strain control of electronic structure, and magnetic properties of [Pr1-xCaxMnO3/SrTiO3](15) superlattices
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AMER INST PHYSICS. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 127:17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the growth, electronic structure, and in-plane magnetic properties of pulsed laser deposition grown 2D superlattice structures [Pr 0.7Ca 0.3MnO 3/SrTiO 3] 15 and [Pr 0.5Ca 0.5MnO 3/SrTiO 3] 15 on (001) oriented SrTiO 3 and LaAlO 3 single crystal substrates. The x-ray reflectivity measurements reveal well-defined interfaces between the manganite and titanate layers along with the existence of Kiessig fringes, providing the evidence for the smooth periodic superlattice structure. The reciprocal space mapping provides signature of tetragonal distortion in all the superlattices. The electronic structure determined from the x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals divalent Sr and Ca, tetravalent Ti, and mixed valent Mn with a pronounce shift of binding energy peaks toward the higher energy side in the superlattices grown on (001) oriented LaAlO 3 as compared to those grown on SrTiO 3. These superlattices exhibit highly anisotropic ferromagnetic character. We used the law of approach to saturation to determine the anisotropy field (H K) and cubic anisotropy constant ( K 1) for all the investigated superlattices. This analysis yields the highest H K similar to 9kOe and K 1 similar to 8 x 10 5erg/cc for the [Pr 0.7Ca 0.3MnO 3/SrTiO 3] 15 superlattice system. Furthermore, significant enhancement of the overall magnetic moment and a decrease in T C ( < 100K) was observed in the case of LaAlO 3 grown superlattice, which indicates a substantial role of residual elastic strain on the magnetic ordering. Our results indicate that the strain induced elongation of MnO 6 octahedra leads to finite possibility of non-orthogonal overlapping of orbitals in the presence of large crystal field splitting of e g levels, which, in turn, causes suppression of the ferromagnetic double exchange interaction.
