  • Evolving Pulsation of the Slowly Rotating Magnetic beta Cep Star xi(1) CMa
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 3rd BRITE science conference. - : POLISH ASTRONOMICAL SOC. ; , s. 154-158
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report BRITE-Constellation photometry of the beta Cep pulsator xi(1) CMa. Analysis of these data reveals a single pulsation period of 0.2095781(3) d, along with its first and second harmonics. We find no evidence for any other frequencies, limiting the value of this star as a target for magneto-asteroseismology. We employ the 17-year database of RV measurements of xi(1) CMa to evaluate evidence for the reported change in pulsation period, and interpret this period change in terms of stellar evolution. We measure a rate-of-change of the period equal to 0.009(1) s yr(-1), consistent with that reported in the literature.

  • Evolutionary roads leading to low effective spins, high black hole masses, and O1/O2 rates for LIGO/Virgo binary black holes
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 636:A&A
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • All ten LIGO/Virgo binary black hole (BH-BH) coalescences reported following the O1/O2 runs have near-zero effective spins. There are only three potential explanations for this. If the BH spin magnitudes are large, then: (i) either both BH spin vectors must be nearly in the orbital plane or (ii) the spin angular momenta of the BHs must be oppositely directed and similar in magnitude. Then there is also the possibility that (iii) the BH spin magnitudes are small. We consider the third hypothesis within the framework of the classical isolated binary evolution scenario of the BH-BH merger formation. We test three models of angular momentum transport in massive stars: A mildly efficient transport by meridional currents (as employed in the Geneva code), an efficient transport by the Tayler-Spruit magnetic dynamo (as implemented in the MESA code), and a very-efficient transport (as proposed by Fuller et al.) to calculate natal BH spins. We allow for binary evolution to increase the BH spins through accretion and account for the potential spin-up of stars through tidal interactions. Additionally, we update the calculations of the stellar-origin BH masses, including revisions to the history of star formation and to the chemical evolution across cosmic time. We find that we can simultaneously match the observed BH-BH merger rate density and BH masses and BH-BH effective spins. Models with efficient angular momentum transport are favored. The updated stellar-mass weighted gas-phase metallicity evolution now used in our models appears to be key for obtaining an improved reproduction of the LIGO/Virgo merger rate estimate. Mass losses during the pair-instability pulsation supernova phase are likely to be overestimated if the merger GW170729 hosts a BH more massive than 50âMâŠ. We also estimate rates of black hole-neutron star (BH-NS) mergers from recent LIGO/Virgo observations. If, in fact. angular momentum transport in massive stars is efficient, then any (electromagnetic or gravitational wave) observation of a rapidly spinning BH would indicate either a very effective tidal spin up of the progenitor star (homogeneous evolution, high-mass X-ray binary formation through case A mass transfer, or a spin-up of a Wolf-Rayet star in a close binary by a close companion), significant mass accretion by the hole, or a BH formation through the merger of two or more BHs (in a dense stellar cluster).

  • Nightside clouds and disequilibrium chemistry on the hot Jupiter WASP-43b
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Nature Astronomy. - 2397-3366. ; In Press
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hot Jupiters are among the best-studied exoplanets, but it is still poorly understood how their chemical composition and cloud properties vary with longitude. Theoretical models predict that clouds may condense on the nightside and that molecular abundances can be driven out of equilibrium by zonal winds. Here we report a phase-resolved emission spectrum of the hot Jupiter WASP-43b measured from 5 μm to 12 μm with the JWST’s Mid-Infrared Instrument. The spectra reveal a large day–night temperature contrast (with average brightness temperatures of 1,524 ± 35 K and 863 ± 23 K, respectively) and evidence for water absorption at all orbital phases. Comparisons with three-dimensional atmospheric models show that both the phase-curve shape and emission spectra strongly suggest the presence of nightside clouds that become optically thick to thermal emission at pressures greater than ~100 mbar. The dayside is consistent with a cloudless atmosphere above the mid-infrared photosphere. Contrary to expectations from equilibrium chemistry but consistent with disequilibrium kinetics models, methane is not detected on the nightside (2σ upper limit of 1–6 ppm, depending on model assumptions). Our results provide strong evidence that the atmosphere of WASP-43b is shaped by disequilibrium processes and provide new insights into the properties of the planet’s nightside clouds. However, the remaining discrepancies between our observations and our predictive atmospheric models emphasize the importance of further exploring the effects of clouds and disequilibrium chemistry in numerical models.

  • An Optically Discovered Outburst from XTE J1859+226
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 956:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using the Zwicky Transient Facility, in 2021 February we identified the first known outburst of the black hole X-ray transient XTE J1859+226 since its discovery in 1999. The outburst was visible at X-ray, UV, and optical wavelengths for less than 20 days, substantially shorter than its full outburst of 320 days in 1999, and the observed peak luminosity was 2 orders of magnitude lower. Its peak bolometric luminosity was only 2 × 1035 erg s−1, implying an Eddington fraction of about 3 × 10−4. The source remained in the hard spectral state throughout the outburst. From optical spectroscopy measurements we estimate an outer disk radius of 1011 cm. The low observed X-ray luminosity is not sufficient to irradiate the entire disk, but we observe a surprising exponential decline in the X-ray light curve. These observations highlight the potential of optical and infrared synoptic surveys to discover low-luminosity activity from X-ray transients.

  • Are most Cataclysmic Variables in Globular Clusters dynamically formed
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Astronomical Union. - 1743-9213. ; 14:351, s. 404-407
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have been investigating populations of cataclysmic variables (CVs) in a set of more than 300 globular cluster (GC) models evolved with themoccacode.[-120pt] One of the main questions we have intended to answer is whether most CVs in GCs are dynamically formed or not. Contrary to what has been argued for a long time, we found that dynamical destruction of primordial CV progenitors is much stronger in GCs than dynamical formation of CVs. In particular, we found that, on average, the detectable CV population is predominantly composed of CVs formed via a typical common envelope phase (â 70 per cent). However, core-collapsed models tend to have higher fractions of bright CVs than non-core-collapsed ones, which suggests then that the formation of CVs is indeed slightly favoured through strong dynamical interactions in core-collapsed GCs, due to the high stellar densities in their cores.

  • MOCCA-SURVEY database I. Accreting white dwarf binary systems in globular clusters - IV. Cataclysmic variables - properties of bright and faint populations
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 483:1, s. 315-331
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate here populations of cataclysmic variables (CVs) in a set of 288 globular cluster (GC) models evolved with the MOCCA code. This is by far the largest sample of GC models ever analysed with respect to CVs. Contrary to what has been argued for a long time, we found that dynamical destruction of primordial CV progenitors is much stronger in GCs than dynamical formation of CVs, and that dynamically formed CVs and CVs formed under no/weak influence of dynamics have similar white dwarf mass distributions. In addition, we found that, on average, the detectable CV population is predominantly composed of CVs formed via a typical common envelope phase (CEP) (≳70 per cent), that only ≈2-4 per cent of all CVs in a GC are likely to be detectable, and that core-collapsed models tend to have higher fractions of bright CVs than non-core-collapsed ones. We also consistently show, for the first time, that the properties of bright and faint CVs can be understood by means of the pre-CV and CV formation rates, their properties at their formation times and cluster half-mass relaxation times. Finally, we show that models following the initial binary population proposed by Kroupa and set with low CEP efficiency better reproduce the observed amount of CVs and CV candidates in NGC 6397, NGC 6752 and 47 Tuc. To progress with comparisons, the essential next step is to properly characterize the candidates as CVs (e.g. by obtaining orbital periods and mass ratios).

  • Monitoring the large-scale magnetic field of AD Leo with SPIRou, ESPaDOnS, and Narval : Towards a magnetic polarity reversal?
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 676
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Context: One clear manifestation of dynamo action on the Sun is the 22-yr magnetic cycle, exhibiting a polarity reversal and a periodic conversion between poloidal and toroidal fields. For M dwarfs, several authors claim evidence of activity cycles from photometry and analyses of spectroscopic indices, but no clear polarity reversal has been identified from spectropolarimetric observations. These stars are excellent laboratories to investigate dynamo-powered magnetic fields under different stellar interior conditions, that is partly or fully convective.Aims: Our aim is to monitor the evolution of the large-scale field of AD Leo, which has shown hints of a secular evolution from past dedicated spectropolarimetric campaigns. This is of central interest to inform distinct dynamo theories, contextualise the evolution of the solar magnetic field, and explain the variety of magnetic field geometries observed in the past. Methods: We analysed near-infrared spectropolarimetric observations of the active M dwarf AD Leo taken with SPIRou between 2019 and 2020 and archival optical data collected with ESPaDOnS and Narval between 2006 and 2019. We searched for long-term variability in the longitudinal field, the width of unpolarised Stokes profiles, the unsigned magnetic flux derived from Zeeman broadening, and the geometry of the large-scale magnetic field using both Zeeman-Doppler imaging and principal component analysis. Results: We found evidence of a long-term evolution of the magnetic field, featuring a decrease in axisymmetry (from 99% to 60%). This is accompanied by a weakening of the longitudinal field (-300 to -50 G) and a correlated increase in the unsigned magnetic flux (2.8-3.6 kG). Likewise, the width of the mean profile computed with selected near-infrared lines manifests a long-term evolution corresponding to field strength changes over the full time series, but does not exhibit modulation with the stellar rotation of AD Leo in individual epochs. Conclusions: The large-scale magnetic field of AD Leo manifested first hints of a polarity reversal in late 2020 in the form of a substantially increased dipole obliquity, while the topology remained predominantly poloidal and dipolar for 14 yr. This suggests that low-mass M dwarfs with a dipole-dominated magnetic field can undergo magnetic cycles.

  • Fe I Oscillator Strengths for Transitions from High-lying Odd-parity Levels
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 848:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report new experimental Fe I oscillator strengths obtained by combining measurements of branching fractions measured with a Fourier Transform spectrometer and time-resolved, laser-induced fluorescence lifetimes. This study covers the spectral region ranging from 213 to 1033 nm. A total of 120 experimental log(gf)-values coming from 15 odd-parity energy levels are provided, 22 of which have not been reported previously and 63 of which have values with lower uncertainty than the existing data. The radiative lifetimes for 60 upper energy levels are presented, 39 of which have no previous measurements.

  • Inelastic silicon-hydrogen collision data for non-LTE applications in stellar atmospheres
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 572, s. A103-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims. Inelastic processes in low-energy Si + H and Si+ + H- collisions are treated for the states from the ground state up to the ionic state, in order to provide rate coefficients needed for non-LTE modeling of Si in cool stellar atmospheres. Methods. Electronic molecular structure is determined using a recently proposed model approach based on an asymptotic method in combination with available ab initio potentials. Nonadiabatic nuclear dynamics are treated by means of a combination of multichannel formulas and the branching-probability-current method, based on the Landau-Zener model for nonadiabatic transition probabilities. Results. Cross sections and rate coefficients for inelastic processes in Si + H and Si+ + H- collisions for all transitions between 26 low-lying states plus the ionic state are calculated. It is shown that the highest rate coefficient values correspond to the excitation, de-excitation, ion-pair formation, and mutual neutralization processes involving the Si(3p4p D-3), Si(3p3d F-3), Si(3p4p D-1), Si(3p3d P-3), Si(3p4p S-1), and the ionic Si+ + H- states. These processes are likely to be important in non-LTE modeling.

  • Kramers-Moyal analysis of interplanetary magnetic field fluctuations at sub-ion scales
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Rendiconti Lincei SCIENZE FISICHE E NATURALI. - : Springer Nature. - 2037-4631 .- 1720-0776. ; 33:4, s. 721-728
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the framework of statistical time series analysis of complex dynamics, we present a multiscale characterization of solar wind turbulence in the near-earth environment. The data analysis, based on the Markov process theory, is meant to estimate the Kramers-Moyal coefficients associated with the measured magnetic field fluctuations. In fact, when the scale-to-scale dynamics can be successfully described as a Markov process, first- and second-order Kramers-Moyal coefficients provide a complete description of the dynamics in terms of Langevin stochastic process. The analysis is carried out using high-resolution magnetic field measurements gathered by Cluster during a fast solar wind period on January 20, 2007. This analysis extends recent findings in the near-Sun environment with the aim of testing the universality of the Markovian nature of the magnetic field fluctuations in the sub-ion/kinetic domain.
