  • Environmental choices vs. covid-19 pandemic fear – plastic governance re-assessment
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Society Register. - : Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan. - 2544-5502. ; 4:2, s. 49-66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Alarming plastic production growth worldwide reinforces the public debate about the prevailing environmental crisis, whereby single-use-plastic (SUP) items are considered as by far the most harmful to the environment and public health. Accordingly, European environmental policy aims at eliminating SUP. Recently, we presented a model of plastic governance that derives from a circular economy approach identifying and taking into consideration perspectives of different actors in the plastic governance, such as producers, wholesalers, shop keepers, consumers, citizen scientists, and academia. Our results illustrate that the vast majority of stakeholders cared for the natural environment and understood the need to phase out SUP from the global economy. We proposed that a knowledge brokerage, undertaken by scientists via means of citizen science, as the most effective method to implement elimination policy, as it provides stakeholders with knowledge on why and how to handle SUP issues. However, at the time of the global COVID-19 pandemic, a plastic governance model required a re-assessment. The perceived role of SUP has changed, as it reflects the health emergency. Namely, due to the health safety reasons stakeholders and consumers are requesting even more SUP than previously. Following up on our data gathered prior to the pandemic, we suggest that under the new circumstances health concerns outweigh the environmental concerns being determined by a shift in the value hierarchization. The paper discusses preliminary results.

  • Prevalence of Babesia microti in free-ranging Baboons and African Green Monkeys
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Parasitology. - 0022-3395 .- 1937-2345. ; 97:1, s. 63-67
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Babesia microti-like parasites have been reported to infect captive non-human primates (NHPs). However, studies on the prevalence of Babesia spp. in free-ranging NHPs are lacking. This investigation aimed at determining the prevalence of B. microti in wild-caught Kenyan NHPs. In total, 125 animals were studied, including 65 olive baboons (Papio cynocephalus anubis) and 60 African green monkeys ([AGMs] Chlorocebus aethiops). Nested polymerase chain reaction targeting Babesia β-tubulin genes was used to diagnose infection prevalence. Results indicated a prevalence of 22% (27/125) B. microti infection in free-ranging NHPs in Kenya. There was no statistically significant difference in B. microti infection prevalence between baboons and AGMs or male and female animals. This is the first report of the presence and prevalence of B. microti in free-ranging Kenyan NHPs.

  • Mobile service value – presenting the newspaper publisher view on how to attract readers and advertizers
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Proceedings, TAGA 2006, 58th Annual Technical Conference, Vancouver, Canada.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As most of today’s media houses publish in multiple channels, they also exist in a multitude of infrastructures. Given the ongoing diffusion of personal computers, handheld devices, and mobile telephones as well as the advent of new technologies such as the e-paper, a new type of ubiquitous information environment is emerging. In this paper we give an update on the development of e-paper technology and provide a literature review of infrastructure issues in ubiquitous information environments. From empirical results from 19 interviews and 9 workshops with newspaper managers and designers in Sweden, Belgium, France and the Netherlands, we address the following research question: What infrastructure considerations arise with the introduction of a new channel in a ubiquitous media environment?

  • Cripping sex education: lessons learned from a programme aimed at young people with mobility impairments
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Sex Education-Sexuality Society and Learning. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1468-1811 .- 1472-0825. ; 18:6, s. 640-654
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper analyses sexuality and relationship education (SRE) in a Swedish college programme aimed at young people with mobility impairments. Interviews and focus groups were conducted to explore students' experiences of the structure, content and usefulness of SRE, and college personnel's SRE practices. Results show that, although many of the issues covered are pertinent for all young people, being disabled raises additional concerns: for example how to handle de-sexualising attitudes, possible sexual practices, and how reliance on assistance impacts upon privacy. Crip theory is used as an analytical framework to identify, challenge and politicise sexual norms and practices. Students' experiences of living in a disablist, heteronormative society can be used as resources for developing cripistemologies, which challenge the private/public binary that often de-legitimises learners' experiences and separates them from teachers' proper' knowledge production. Crip SRE would likely hold benefits for non-disabled pupils as well, through its use of more inclusive pedagogy and in work to expand sexual possibilities. Crip SRE has the potential to disrupt taken-for-granted dis/ability and sexuality divides as well as to politicise issues that many young people presently experience as personal shortcomings'.

  • Successful treatment of recurrent malignancy-associated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis with a modified HLH-94 immunochemotherapy and allogeneic stem cell transplantation
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Medical Oncology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1357-0560 .- 1559-131X. ; 29:2, s. 1231-1236
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Acquired hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) triggered by a known or still to be recognized malignancy is a life-threatening hyperinflammatory syndrome due to massive cytokine release from activated lymphocytes and macrophages. Malignancy-associated HLH (M-HLH) often impedes adequate treatment of malignancy and has the worst outcome compared with any other form of HLH. The incidence of M-HLH is unknown, and there are no published treatment recommendations addressed to this HLH form. Here, we report the case of a young woman with recurrent ALK1-positive anaplastic large T-cell lymphoma and M-HLH successfully treated with a modified HLH-94 protocol, allogeneic stem cell transplantation (alloSCT) and donor lymphocyte infusion (DLI). More than 3 years after DLI, the patient is alive, in complete remission from her malignancy and HLH-free, although suffering from extensive chronic graft-versus-host disease. AlloSCT and, if needed, DLI performed to consolidate remission of malignancy and HLH may have a curative impact on both entities. We propose that when discussing possible treatment options for patients with M-HLH, alloSCT should be considered in eligible individuals.

  • Composite Material Based on Macroporous Polyaniline and Osmium Redox Complex for Biosensor Development
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Electroanalysis. - : Wiley. - 1040-0397. ; 26:7, s. 1623-1630
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Here the feasibility of layers based on the conducting polymer polyaniline (PANI) as component of glucose biosensors using glucose oxidase (GOx) as enzyme and [Os(bpy)(2)(4-aminomethylpyridine)Cl]PF6 (OsCmplx) as electrochemical mediator, is evaluated. Particularly, PANI was employed to obtain a nanostructured macroporous material (m-PANI) around polystyrene nanoparticles taken as template and the mediator was co-immobilized during the polymerizing procedure. The GOx biosensor based on OsCmplx modified m-PANI provides a linear response to glucose concentration in the range 5 up to 65 mM with a sensitivity of 3.54 mu A/mM/cm(2) (on a projected geometric area=0.07 cm(2)), an LOD of 0.8 mM and a good precision (%RSD <= 7, n=5); the biosensor is stable showing a decrease of 10% to the value of the sensitivity after 15 days of use and of about 50% after 40 days.

  • Optimizing or maximizing? A challenge to sustainable tourism
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sustainable Tourism. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0966-9582 .- 1747-7646. ; 24:4, s. 527-548
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Virtually all destinations seek to increase tourist numbers, pursuing economic maximization strategies. Considerably less attention is paid to optimizing existing tourist systems to create more profitable, stable, resilient and potentially more sustainable entities. While aspects of tourist expenditure, average length of stay and seasonality as three key destination management variables have received considerable attention in the literature, focus has usually been on the identification of “profitable” tourism markets by considering observed patterns of spending, length of stay and vacation timing. Building on such earlier studies, this paper focuses on flexibilities in these parameters: could tourists have spent more, stayed longer or visited during a different season? Perceptions of destination expensiveness as a potential deterrent to visitation were also addressed. Based on a sample (n = 1914) of domestic and international tourists in the Swedish cities of Kalmar and Stockholm, data were collected in face-to-face interviews using questionnaires. Results indicate considerable potential to optimize the Swedish tourism system with regard to all variables studied, while also providing new insights for destination management in the context of economic resilience. Results also indicate the need for researchers everywhere to have detailed market knowledge if they are to persuade the industry to change its sustainability behavior.

  • Mold Design for More Accurate Chemical Composition Analysis of Aluminum Alloys
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Light Metals 2021. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030653958 - 9783030653965 ; , s. 751-757
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Chemical composition analysis using sampling practices in as-cast aluminum alloys are not accurate enough. Optical emission spectrometry (OES) analyses of samples taken at specified milling depths do not match the desired nominal composition due to segregation phenomenon. Moreover, macrosegregation profiles within samples cast with current molds often exhibit significant variations. Various types of molds have been tested in the past to solve this problem, but none have had a satisfactory outcome. This paper presents research on a novel mold with an insulated periphery designed to yield more accurate sampling tests. The results from samples made with the insulated periphery mold show segregation profiles with good reproducibility. A value close to the nominal composition was observed at 6–7 mm milling depth. The reproducibility of segregation profiles is correlated to one-dimensional solidification, minimizing surface segregation areas, and melt convection.

  • Sexualpolitikens genus i Frankrike och Sverige
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Kvinnovetenskaplig tidskrift. - : Amnesforeningen for genusvetenskap. - 0348-8365. ; 20:3, s. 18-30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This comparative study, inspired by Marc Bloch, deals with the abortion and contraception politics of Sweden and France during the first half of the XXth century from a gender perspective At a discursive level the resemblance between the two countries is clear: this is the main result of this study. At this time many western countries, restricted the diffusion of contraceptives in some way and passed more efficient and abortion legislation thus increasing surveillance. The dominant view in Sweden and France, although the explicit motives for these policies were different in the two countries, was that sexuality was man's business and that it was men who were to be protected from contraception "propaganda" or to be led on the straight path to marriage and fatherhood. Nature intended women to be primarily mothers and they were therefore not seen as sexually active but instead in need of close protection, i.e. a repressive abortion law, to help them to fulfil they nature. This discourse dominated the political debates and was taken up by women politicians and women's organisations as well. The exception was the small circle of neo-malthusians and supporters of birth control. The church seems to have played very little role in these debates at this time in both Sweden and France. The discourse with respect to gender is then the same in Sweden and France, but there are some other differences that need explaining. A comparison highlights the particularities of the two countries. One of the differences is the important role played by eugenics in Sweden. The fascination exercised by medical science on politicians seems to have been particularly strong on the left wing where it was seen as a potential ally and as providing legitimisation in the struggle for a progressive social policy. Scientific thought in Sweden also seern to have been invaded by eugenics. It was very different in France where the scientists resisted eugenic ideas and stayed attached to an older belief that milieu was more important than inheritance. This belief coincided with that of the rather socially progressive and democratic French political regime of the time who hoped that upbringing and education would realise the famous dream of Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité.
