  • Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Communications Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2399-3642. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data.

  • A century of trends in adult human height
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: eLIFE. - 2050-084X. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Being taller is associated with enhanced longevity, and higher education and earnings. We reanalysed 1472 population-based studies, with measurement of height on more than 18.6 million participants to estimate mean height for people born between 1896 and 1996 in 200 countries. The largest gain in adult height over the past century has occurred in South Korean women and Iranian men, who became 20.2 cm (95% credible interval 17.522.7) and 16.5 cm (13.319.7) taller, respectively. In contrast, there was little change in adult height in some sub-Saharan African countries and in South Asia over the century of analysis. The tallest people over these 100 years are men born in the Netherlands in the last quarter of 20th century, whose average heights surpassed 182.5 cm, and the shortest were women born in Guatemala in 1896 (140.3 cm; 135.8144.8). The height differential between the tallest and shortest populations was 19-20 cm a century ago, and has remained the same for women and increased for men a century later despite substantial changes in the ranking of countries.

  • Digital Domain Power Division Multiplexing DDO-OFDM Transmission with Successive Interference Cancellation
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 CONFERENCE ON LASERS AND ELECTRO-OPTICS (CLEO). - Washington, D.C. : IEEE conference proceedings.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two independent 2.5-Gb/s DDO-OFDM signals are simultaneously transmitted over 25km SMF using digital domain power division multiplexing and successive interference cancellation. With optimized power division ratio and enhanced SD-FEC, the spectral efficiency can be doubled.

  • Epitaxial growth of TiSe2/TiO2 heterostructure
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Current Opinion in Chemical Engineering. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 2211-3398. ; 6:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Here we report that TiSe2 thin films can be epitaxially grown on TiO2 substrates despite different lattice symmetry between the two materials. The TiSe2 thin films can be prepared on TiO2 via molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) in two ways: by conventional co-deposition using selenium and titanium sources, and by evaporating just selenium on reconstructed surfaces of TiO2. Both growth methods yield crystalline thin films with similar electronic band structures. TiSe2 films on TiO2 substrates exhibit large electron doping and a lack of charge density wave (CDW) order, which is different from both bulk single crystal TiSe2 and TiSe2 thin films on graphene. These phenomena can be explained by selenium vacancies in the TiSe2 films, which naturally occur when these films are grown on TiO2 substrates. Our successful growth of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) films on a transition metal oxide (TMO) substrate provides a platform to further tune the electrical and optical properties of TMDC thin films.

  • One thousand plant transcriptomes and the phylogenomics of green plants
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 574:7780, s. 679-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Green plants (Viridiplantae) include around 450,000-500,000 species(1,2) of great diversity and have important roles in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Here, as part of the One Thousand Plant Transcriptomes Initiative, we sequenced the vegetative transcriptomes of 1,124 species that span the diversity of plants in a broad sense (Archaeplastida), including green plants (Viridiplantae), glaucophytes (Glaucophyta) and red algae (Rhodophyta). Our analysis provides a robust phylogenomic framework for examining the evolution of green plants. Most inferred species relationships are well supported across multiple species tree and supermatrix analyses, but discordance among plastid and nuclear gene trees at a few important nodes highlights the complexity of plant genome evolution, including polyploidy, periods of rapid speciation, and extinction. Incomplete sorting of ancestral variation, polyploidization and massive expansions of gene families punctuate the evolutionary history of green plants. Notably, we find that large expansions of gene families preceded the origins of green plants, land plants and vascular plants, whereas whole-genome duplications are inferred to have occurred repeatedly throughout the evolution of flowering plants and ferns. The increasing availability of high-quality plant genome sequences and advances in functional genomics are enabling research on genome evolution across the green tree of life.

  • Physical-layer network coding for passive optical interconnect in datacenter networks
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 25:15, s. 17788-17797
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We introduce physical-layer network coding (PLNC) technique in a passive optical interconnect (POI) architecture for datacenter networks. The implementation of the PLNC in the POI at 2.5 Gb/s and 10Gb/s have been experimentally validated while the gains in terms of network layer performances have been investigated by simulation. The results reveal that in order to realize negligible packet drop, the wavelengths usage can be reduced by half while a significant improvement in packet delay especially under high traffic load can be achieved by employing PLNC over POI.

  • Eoandromeda and the origin of Ctenophora.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Evolution & Development. - 1520-541X .- 1525-142X. ; 13:5, s. 408-414
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Ediacaran fossil Eoandromeda octobrachiata had a high conical body with eight arms in helicospiral arrangement along the flanks. The arms carried transverse bands proposed to be homologous to ctenophore ctenes (comb plates). Eoandromeda is interpreted as an early stem-group ctenophore, characterized by the synapomorphies ctenes, comb rows, and octoradial symmetry but lacking crown-group synapomorphies such as tentacles, statoliths, polar fields, and biradial symmetry. It probably had a pelagic mode of life. The early appearance in the fossil record of octoradial ctenophores is most consistent with the Planulozoa hypothesis (Ctenophora is the sister group of Cnidaria + Bilateria) of metazoan phylogeny.
