Notes

  • 'Old Work Revisited' is the most recent (2022) node in an intermittent research trajectory where I interrogate, via exhibition-making, the forms and rhetorics of what are commonly referred to as 'career survey' or 'retrospective' exhibitions. Previous iterations have included: 'ESTHER SHALEV-GERZ' (Jeu de Paume, Paris, 2010. Advisor to the artist.); 'Yvonne Rainer: Dance and Film ' (Tramway, Glasgow, 2010. Curator.), 'In Case There's a Reason: The Theatre of Mistakes' (Raven Row gallery, London, 2017. Curator.). The overarching question that drives these projects is how such forms can be formatted to articulate the complexities and granular activities of artistic practice, as opposed to an articulation of multiple works produced over an expanse of time by an artist. 'Old Work Revisited' sought to articulate the role that a methodology of curating has played over 30 years duration in my own artistic practice. To achieve this previously commissioned works and projects were revisited and re-worked. In particular this exhibition also sought to research processes of de-contextualisation and re-articulation to question what may now constitute a previous art work, as previous art works had originally been developed in multiple socio-political circumstances, and as social arts practice. 'Old Work Revisited' was organised, via Kerstin Bergendal, at the invitation of the managing committee of LOKALE 27 following a written proposal. LOKALE 27 is an artist-run space, primarily organised by mid-late career artists. As such it is highly unusual within the cultures of artist-led spaces which are more ordinarily organised by younger artists.
