Reporting on M/S Estonia: Media-on-media events and interprofessional boundary work

• The media coverage following MS Estonia catastrophy was criticized for its instrusiveness and its tendency towards the exploitation of individual human suffering. As with any media coverage, access to the debate is crucial to any potential participant. When the debate concerns criticism directed against media behavior, we are confronted with media-on-media events. The analysis of metacommunication and interproffesional discourse in these media-on-media shows that these are almost exclusively dominated by the voices of the news workers. Potentional external voices, if heard at all, are marginalized, and attempts at a critique from others professionals are effectively displaced by various strategies. The notion of recontextualization helps us to understand how both discursive and ideological strategies are utilized in inter-professional boundary work.
