Navigating narrative and analysis : Students’ mediation of historical content through storytelling

• This study delves into the complex relationship between storytellingand historical understanding. Focused on how lower-secondary stu-dents employ narrative discourse in writing, it examines the extent towhich their storytelling aids or limits historical comprehension. Drawingon systemic-functional linguistics and history education theories, thestudy highlights that while narratives might encourage personalizedperspective-taking, thus potentially undermining objective historicalanalysis, they also reveal a more complex interplay between narrativeform and historical insight than previously recognized. Through a com-parative evaluation of student texts, it explores how certain types ofnarratives—descriptive, evocative, and emotive—interact with differentfoci of historical understanding. The analysis underscores the challengeof integrating broader historical analysis within personal narratives butalso showcases successful examples of this integration. The article pro-poses strategies for educators to leverage storytelling more effectively,emphasizing the need for linguistic scaffolding to enhance students’historical narratives.
