Gudasöner – fanns de?

• In antiquity, certain famous men came to be widely regarded as the offspring of a supernatural union between their mothers and a god. Among the most prominent of these sons of gods were Plato, Alexander the Great, Scipio the Elder and Augustus. As a rule, the god was said to have had intercourse with the woman in the guise of a serpent. However, the possibility of a more spiritual conception is taken into account in at least one case, that of Plato. This article examines the attitude of the educated elite to this kind of legend and their ideas as to how such absurd tales may have originated.
