  • Materials derived from natural resources are studied extensively now days and the preparation of novel nanocomposites based on biopolymers has drawn specific attention. It is expected that this type of nanocomposites will open new areas for medical, packaging and electronic applications. This presentation will give a general overview of the processing technologies of bio-nanocomposites based on cellulose whiskers (crystals) and fibrils in different polymers and show how the material combinations as well the orientation will affect the final composite mechanical and thermal properties. The used reinforcements are whiskers from wood, fibrils from wheat straw etc. and the matrix materials are polylactic acid (PLA), cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Processing techniques for nanostructured materials includes drying, feeding and blending techniques, the challenges of these will be discussed. Further more, the dispersion of nano sized materials in a polymer matrix is difficult but necessary to achieve high mechanical properties and it has shown to be difficult to characterize that since both the matrix and reinforcement are soft, non-conductive and light. Possible characterization methods will also be discussed.
