  • Wild Edible Fungi (WEF) are an important non-timber forest resource in many African countries, which can be used to supplement the diet and to generate additional income. Mushroom preferences are known to vary between ethnic groups, even in the same region, and in order to know which mushrooms have the most potential to be economically utilized by local people, this study compared the use, preference, traditional ecological knowledge and folk taxonomy of WEF between four ethnic groups (Bariba, Gando, Lokpa and Yom) from five villages bordering the Upper Ouémé Forest Reserve in Benin. In 70 interviews a total of 71 mushrooms were mentioned to be used, of which 70 as food, 1 as medicine and 4 as both food and medicine. Overall, we found that general knowledge of the most commonly used mushrooms is similar between members of different ethnic groups, but the particular combination of species known varied between ethnic groups and genders. Additionally, older participants and women tended to recognize more species and of the four ethnic groups the Lokpa recognized less mushrooms than participants from other ethnic groups. The most preferred mushrooms for all groups combined were Termitomyces schimperi, Psathyrella tuberculata, Lactifluus edulis, Macrocybe lobayensis and Chlorophyllum palaeotropicum. As a wood-saprotroph Psathyrella tuberculata offers the possibility of cultivation, whereas the other species could be sustainably collected from the wild and thus potentially form a source of extra income for the people living around the forest. Moreover, the results from this study give an indication of the perceived value of WEF, which can be used in forest management planning.
