- The positive effects that have been established from the laboratory tests of cored samples of pavement surface layers performed, according to the KGO-III method, compared with reference pavements (see VTI notat 19-2004), and after 3 years of traffic (see VTI notat 15-2008), remain after 7 years of traffic, except for the section with 20 per cent reclaimed asphalt. This section shows decreased durability after "winter conditioning", a test method developed at VTI, both for stiffness modulus and wear resistance (Prall test). Results from field measurements performed directly after compaction and after 3 years of traffic, concerning noise, friction, texture and rut depth, show that the KGO-III pavement did well compared to the reference pavement. (No field measurements have been done after 7 years of traffic). The mix procedure, called the flow mixing procedure, according to the KGO-III concept, gives a more homogenous mix with thicker mastic (binder + fine aggregate) film around coarse aggregates. This enables manufacturing of bituminous mixes at lower temperature and lower binder content, which gives qualitative, environmental and economic advantages. The durability problem after 7 years, for the section with 20 per cent reclaimed asphalt, can be caused by the fact that the mix including reclaimed asphalt did not provide an asphalt mix that fully met the intentions of the KGO-III concept. The contractors of the Swedish Road Administration have during the period 1998-2010 manufactured over 520 000 tones bituminous mixtures with this method, mostly for surface layers. The recommendation from the Swedish Road Administration to use KGO-III pavement is partly based on the results of these test sections.
