Tid, pengar och sociala nätverk : En studie av arbetsvillkor och vardagsliv i Sävsjö

• I denna rapport studeras fördelningen av självupplevd tid och ekonomiska resurser i ett lokalsamhälle. Syftet är att undersöka levnadsförhållanden för dem som är förankrade i arbetslivet med krav på effektivitet och fortbildning och för de obehövda som inte har en naturlig plats på arbetsmarknaden. Undersökningen uppmärksammar kontrasterna mellan tidfattiga och tidrika livsstilar och visar hur varierande förutsättningar resulterar i klyftor i vardagslivet vilket kan leda till nya ojämlikhetsmönster i det svenska samhället. Studien har finansierats av Europeiska socialfondens Artikel 6 och ingår i Pacemaking, ett forskningsprogram som tar upp samspelen mellan stress, tid och teknologi i ett föränderligt samhälle. • This study focuses on the division of time and economic resources in Swedish community. The purpose is to explore the living conditions of two groups in society: those who are established in the labour force that experience great demands on their efficiency and educational level and those who are unwanted and who do not have a natural place in the labour market. The study increases knowledge about those who live in time-rich and time-poor conditions and examines in which way these contrasts are the breeding ground for new patterns of inequality. An unbalanced division of time and resources for the households does not only exist in work situations but also in everyday life in the home and in leisure time. The time-rich can experience having small margins partly due to a lack of social networks and social recognition, while the time-poor experience it due to multiple and unwieldy social roles in and outside labour market. This then can create a risk for ill-health and marginalisation. Society has tried to cope with these two different problems in completely different ways lacking a uniform strategy, although both of the problems are related to income, the one through salaried work and the other through income support. The results do not only exhibit the polarizing tendencies in terms of time and finance. There are also similar differences concerning the social roles. Time-rich people have a hard time finding an alternative social network outside the labour market. Another result is that many life-cycle changes that require both a lot of time and a lot of money occur at the same time in a person’s life. These adjustments can impact negatively on health issues during that period of time. One important conclusion is that the reasons for ill-health are not solely related to the labour market. This study indicates that a difficult social situation in general can be the dominant cause of ill-health and being off sick. In other words: it is not certain that we can treat ill-health with work projects and rehabilitation without taking the individual’s whole life-situation into consideration. The imbalance between time and money in everyday life also implies a threat to gender equality. Social roles for women are spread throughout a wider field of responsibility while the work field is the dominant sphere for men. Although a variation of roles in everyday life can be rewarding, a certain limit or level can be desirable. Multiple social roles in ordinary work, domestic work as well as other obligations in their leisure time further increases the imbalance between time and money for women.
