Experiences from education and training in building crafts

• This paper is a brief compilation of some experiences from education in building crafts. The Vocational College of Crafts in Mariestad is managing the program in building crafts, besides another education in garden craft and design and third under development in practical landscape preservation. The education is part of a governmental pilot program in advanced vocational education (AVE) since 1997. Education is post-secondary, in the sense that it is a proceeding career for building workers after national upper secondary school. The aim is that the courses should combine a practical orientation with in-depth theoretical knowledge. Stressed experiences comprise both school-related items of how to find relevancy and equilibrium of subjects in the syllabus, sequence and structure of courses and pedagogy in realisation. The incitements of performing this type of education is put forward in a critical discussion about the pilot program as such and the possibilities to get the supply knowledge from employment market and academic institutions.
