Focusing on targeting law and practice in contemporary warfare this paper brings international humanitarian legal (IHL) scholarship into conversation with posthumainist feminist theory for the purpose of thinking more carefully about an IHL responding to contemporary warfare and life. I suggest that posthumanist feminist scholarship is helpful for describing how contemporary warfare is already conducted and how the targetable body known through the IHL framework is both material and digital. Arguing that posthumanist ontology, and thus a posthumanitarian ontology for IHL, avails a much needed critical position from which to question and critique the ‘human’ and ‘humanitarian’ aim underwriting IHL, the paper further proposes a posthumanist turn in IHL – a posthumanitarian international law – which acknowledges and seek to aknowledge and protect life in its various and entangled forms during armed conflicts beyond that which the anthropocenic world-order and ontology of contemporary IHL avails.
