14C-dating of the Late Bronze Age city of Hala Sultan Tekke: status report 2020

• The aim of this chapter is to present the updated radiocarbon chronology of the Late Bronze Age metropolis of Hala Sultan Tekke on Cyprus, which flourished from ca 1630 to 1150 BC. In the course of the current excavations, which started in 2010, 50 AMS 14C dates from various city quarters (CQ) and the cemetery area (Area A) were obtained. Whenever possible, short-lived terrestrial plant remains were used for dating in order to avoid any material-inherent age o昀昀sets. If only charcoals were available the samples were inspected by a dendrochronologist and only samples where a negligible ‘old wood’ effect could be expected, were selected for 14C determinations. A compilation of these data is presented here. The number of available dates (34) of samples from Strata 3 to 1 from CQ1 allowed a Bayesian model to determine the most probable time intervals when the transition between the various strata took place.
