The Relevance of the Concept of Reference Groups to the Sociology of Knowledge.

• The renewed interest in the sociology of knowledge during the past few years has primarily been a revival of the classical lieerature. Few efforts have been made to relate or to compare this discipline with ideas or concepts developed in other fields of sociologu. One development with which a profibable comparison can be made is the concept of reference groups. This concept, although similar in many respects, points to types of social influence often overlooked by the classicaal sociology of knowledge. In both fields the group or social situation is seen as guiding and shaping the production of knowledge by the individual participants. The concept of reference groups, however, allows one to go beyond the single membership group implicit in the sociology of knowledge. Ideas can also be produced in reference to non-membership groups, to negative reference groups, and to multiple reference groups.
