- This volume includes 11 articles which cover a number of pivotal turning points in Arab societies which have inspired to new aesthetic values and forms of expression in Modern Arabic literature until the 1980s. Discussions center on themes such as psycho-social and existential factors leading to the rise of the Modern Arabic Novel, the East-West encounter and search for a modern Arab identity, the influence of avant-garde literary magazines, and the indelible imprint of Naguib Mahfouz in Arabic literary creativity.
