- In this survey structural studies on some polysaccharides isolated from the families of Enterobachteriaceae (Klebsiella and Salmonella) and Parvobacteriaceae (Yersinia) will be discussed. The occurence of some rare or not earlier reported deoxysugars is demonstrated, namely, 6-deoxy-D-manno-heptose, 3-deoxy-L-glycero-pentulosonic acid and five of the isomers of 3,6-dideoxy-hexoses.Species from the genus Salmonella have been studied intensively over the last years. They are of particular importance to man because of their etiological role in food infections, and are responsible for most of the violent gastrointestinal disturbances that may occur after a short incubation period. Salmonella species may also produce typhiod and paratyphiod fever and the most harmful species are found in the serogroups A, B, C and D. The structures of the 0-antigenic polysaccharides from the last three serogroups have been established by chemical methods, but little was known of serogroup A
