- The article is based on the analyses of 30 interviews conducted with agrarian entrepreneurs on the Hungarian countryside between 2000-2003. It aims to explore in which way did the creation of new economic structures become the arena for the articulation of gender relations. In the interviewed families women’s engagement was preconditioned by their ability to resolve the competing demands on their labour power. They had to comply with demands rising from the family’s daily reproduction and those dictated by the priorities of the enterprise. Meanwhile, men were free from reproductive duties. Women experienced autonomy as economic actors. However, this autonomy was typically concentrated to certain areas of the enterprise. At the same time men took charge of the economically most central areas of farm and enterprise leadership.
