- Background: Based on a hermeneutic approach and synthesis of 12 qualitative studies on women’s and midwives’ experiences of childbearing, A Midwifery Model (MiMo) of Woman Centred Care was developed in Icelandic and Swedish settings. This study is an Icelandic part of an ongoing study to evalutate it´s use and effects in practice. The model is dynamic and includes three central intertwined themes with sub-themes that involve interactions with the childbearing woman in: a reciprocal relationship; a birthing atmosphere; using grounded knowledge of the midwife. Overall is the context of culture of place of birth and the balancing act of the midwife´s care. Purpose/Objective: The aim was to develop a guiding tool to use when implementing and evaluating woman centred care based on the MiMo model, enhanching physiological birth. Method: Ethnographic rapid action research, on a mixed low- and high risk labour ward, in four reflective group meetings and one focus group. Recent birth stories were told, with reflections of experiences in relation to the guiding tool under development. Data was collected analysed in March and April 2016. Key Findings: The guiding tool is a pocket card with a check list to use when informing, reflecting and rapporting on care. It refers to the first encounter, being present with the woman, giving and receiving information, stengthening and creating a calm, professionally and emotionally safe birth setting, enhanching physiological birth in relation to each woman. Discussion: This guiding tool will be used in further studies when evaluating the use and effect of the MiMo model in midwifery practice and education.
