Abstract Subject headings

The presentation focuses on the Icelandic language as it appears in four Basque-Icelandic glossaries, a residue from dealings between Basque whalers and Icelandic peasants in the 17th century. The Icelandic items (around 1,000 in total) are compared to the entries in two Icelandic-Latin dictionaries published in the 17th century, and around one third of them is unique for the glossaries. The discrepancy between the vocabulary in the glossaries versus the dictionaries could both be explained by the different lexical functions (target versus source language) and by the different purposes (to facilitate verbal communication between Basques and Icelanders, versus to make the Icelandic medieval literature accessible to foreigners).
