Bits and Pieces of Information in Police Practice

• Efficient management of information is crucial to all organizations. This paper investigates the nature of information management in the police, and more specifically how beat officers manage information in their everyday practice. In the practice, these offices are exposed and confronted with various bits and pieces of information such as tips, rumors, gossip, notes on bulletin boards and other pieces of information throughout the working shift. Based on experience, interviews and observations in the field this paper sets out to answer, first: how are beat officers using bits and pieces in their daily practice? And second, what properties should information technology have to support the management of bits and pieces? The paper concludes that beat officers are social actors and bricoleurs, collecting available information for future use. Further, it is suggested that wiki technology could serve as platform to support beat officers management of bits and pieces of information.
