  • L. Zamenhof (1859--1917) wrote a treatise on Yiddish grammar around 1880.  It is written in Russian and was at least partly elaborated in Moscow.  About the same time he worked on a constructed language called Lingvo universala `Universal Language', which is a development of his first known language project Lingwe uniwersala (1878) and a predecessor of Lingvo internacia `International Language' (1887), later to become known under the name of Esperanto.I compare Yiddish as it is presented in Zamenhof's grammar with Lingvo universala.  The comparison demonstrates that Yiddish influenced his Universal Language more than it influenced Esperanto.
