  • This thesis aims at describing the structure of the lexicon from a typological and contrastive point of view. The description is based on a theoretical model that combines semantic field analysis and componential analysis. The study has two parts. The first. Three semantic fields in Swedish and some other languages, deals with verbs and other predicates belonging to the semantic fields of perception, cognition and emotion (collectively: The mental field). The structure of a semantic field is seen as the result of the interaction of a set of more or less field specific components and a set of components grouped into three general semantic systems that cut across all verbal semantic fields: - The dynamic system including notions such as activity, inchoative and state; - The orientation system determining the selection of a subject; - The system of lexical presuppositions and implications. A large number of Swedish verbs are analyzed according to this model to show the basic semantic structure of the fields. Selected parts of the fields are analyzed also from a contrastive and typological point of view. The second part of the thesis, A typological study of the verbs of perception as a semantic field, is based on data from approximately 40 languages obtained with a questionnaire. A lexicalization hierarchy is presented that predicts the order of appearance of lexical items representing the most basic meaning components within the field. Other topics covered are characteristic patterns of polysemy within the field, techniques for forming predicates in different types of languages and grammatical devices compensating for missing lexical contrasts (e.g. case shift, aspect shift).
