  • In 1956 the wreck of the 64-gun Swedish warship Wasa, sunk on her maiden voyage in the harbour of Stockholm the 10th of August 1628, was found at a depth of 32 metres. Preparations for salvaging the ship started, and in April 1961 the Wasa broke the surface after 333 years on the sea bottom. Since then, the Wasa has been on exhibit and is one of the most interesting tourist attractions in Stockholm. During its long sojourn on the bottom of the harbour the ship’s rigging, aftercastle, railings and beak-head gradually fell into pieces. The salvaging of the Wasa therefore did not entail only the raising of the damaged hull, including the ship’s equipment and personal belongings of the members of the crew, but also several thousands loose constructional parts, nearly 500 wooden figure sculptures and several hundreds of ornaments and decorated architectural pieces. The restoration of the Wasa, the aim of which is to restore the ship to its original shape and appearance, means replacing all the loose pieces and carvings to their original location on the hull. This book deals with the carved decoration of the Wasa. A full and detailed account of the figural sculptures and ornaments is given, and an attempt is made to put them into a wide naval architectural as well as an art historical and ideological context. The introductory Part One (Chapters I—III) will provide a brief history of ship decoration up to the middle of the seventeenth century and give the political basis and the historical background of the Wasa: its building, foundering and salvaging. It is also devoted to general information of the material: the recovery of the sculptures, preservation, scientific arrangement etc. Part Two (Chapters IV—X) is the main part of the book. It is dedicated to the real working up of the sculptures. Owing to correspondence regarding shape and content, the sculptures are classified into a number of categories which have been arranged in topographical order, according to the location on the ship of each category. In each category the actual sculptures are described in a detailed way and dealt with as regards style and iconography. Part Three (Chapters XI—XII) provides a survey of the visual programme of the ornamentation and is also dedicated to an account of the woodcarvers. The book ends with a numerical catalogue
