520 | a Spaces of Residence -Chalmers architects on residential qualitiesEds. Ola Nylander, Sten Gromark, Fredrik Nilsson & Christina Redvall, Axl books, Stockholm 2007, Swedish,With contributions by Ola Nylander, Sten Gromark, Fredrik Nilsson, Christina Redvall, Kaj Granath, Sören Olson, Katrin Paadam, Anna Eriksson, Karin Drakenberg, Håkan Trygged, Maria Sandqvist, Petter Lodmark & Jenny Ström Hansson. For most human beings the residence represents without any doubt the most intimate relation to and the most fundamental encounter with architecture. Material properties and organizational structures of residential spaces highly condition our ways of residing. And yet our ways of relating to residence shape the ways the built structures are identified and created, also based upon a continuity of our evolving desires and changing demands, ultimately bringing new form to our residential spaces. When emerging societal and cultural transformations profoundly alters our perceptions of traditional residential typologies and conventions the field is open for radically new spatial concepts to be sometimes suddenly born. University education in housing and residential design is, on the one hand, often focused on the preservation of experiences and genuine knowledge acquired in the past and, on the other hand, at the best simultaneously looking forward towards continuously ongoing acts of twofold and multifaceted social and architectural invention. This necessary double way of looking is one of the major ambitions behind the book Spaces of Residence, where we want to present moments, fragments and excerpts as reflections emanating from the constant and long term evolution of a well established activity of combined training and research on housing and residential architecture at Chalmers School of Architecture, Göteborg, Sweden. | |
