Strategic Use of Application Packages in Organizations

• At the Institute for Business Process Development (Institute V) we have developed a method for acquisition of application packages in order to have a better support for business activities in organizations. This approach is called the SIV-method and has been applied to operative information systems in both small and large companies. As a result of an empirical investigation there is a need to study how application packages can be used to create strategic information systems in organizations.It is maybe a common mistake that we always need specially designed strategic information systems (SIS) to create a competitive edge. More often we utilize existing operative systems in an intellectual way for attaining strategic goals on the market. In this sense it is interesting to study how ordinary application packages could be used for strategic purposes. Another possibility is to design interorganizational systems to facilitate strategic alliances (networks) of companies in the business world.The purpose of the project is to gain deeper knowledge about situations which are characterized by a strategic use of application packages in organizations. Application packages will be a major component of future information technology in both small and large companies. Application packages (or packaged software) are ready-made information systems which you either can buy or re-use from outside organizations
